A little better today

I'm about to have some coffee, after 14 hours not eating or drinking . I probably won't eat for a couple more hours, either.

I forgot to mention another element of Fast February: the "fiscal fast". Some of you may have heard this term before. It's exactly what it sounds like: stop spending money. In my case it just means not buying anything specifically for myself: no snacks, no takeout, no video games, etc.

I've never tried dry fasting. Whenever I fast before, I would continue to drink water. What is the benefit of dry fasting compared to fasting while allowing water?

reply

Your body goes into autophagy during a dry fast much faster than it does during a wet fast.

In autophagy, our bodies metabolizes lots of intercellular debris that is otherwise not good for us.

Also, your body ramps up the production of "endogenous water". Cells produce water as a product of metabolic reactions and producing more water helps to flush that same intercellular debris out of the body.

It's a little uncomfortable, at first, if you're used to "staying hydrated". Many of us conditioned ourselves to think we need to drink something, right around the time our bodies would start switching state. However, I got used to the new state very quickly (similar to how you stop feeling hungry, once you get used to going without food).

Is it a tradition of yours or a custom of your culture? Fasting, both materially and spiritually, makes the human being grow in all aspects.

reply

No, my culture is intensely hedonistic and attaches no value to deferred gratification.

This is the first time I read this term and I am quite surprised. Here I share a phrase: Pleasure is the first good. It is the beginning of all preference and all aversion. It is the absence of pain in the body and restlessness in the soul. (Epicurus)
