Confession: I don't remember if I've ever used any other search engine than Google's.
(97.76% Indians use Google Search, it's 10% more than the Americans 87.34%)
You can call me the culprit because as much as I hate Google's products (now), I've never given alternatives a genuine effort. My hatred for them isn't based on the results I get while using them but for the creepiness that comes along.
But, who doesn't know (now) that Google is the creepiest thief of them all? Still a close to 90% market share for a thief!!
However there's a glimpse of hope as Google's market share for search engines has been declining for the last 6 months. To be more accurate, it's actually remained under 90% (slightly) for 6 months for the first time since 2015.
(Before 2015, Yahoo Search was still a thing)
But, as soon as I came to know that Baidu is used in China, I doubt this 90% king status of Google Search. But who knows, I'm not sure?
Is AI a real threat to Google Search? I've also listened that Google considers AI a bigger threat for its Search Engine monopoly than Baidu, Yahoo or Yandex. Why so?
While there’s no big dataset yet on whether users have changed behavior, AI-aficionados aren’t limiting themselves to traditional research or rewriting emails. They’re also searching for everything from recipes, memes, and fashion inspiration: all of which are traditionally in the purview of Google Search.
Now this compelled me to think that all the hala baloo surrounding AI is mostly an effort to disrupt Google's monopoly and Google's reply by creating its own AI is just a counter measure. Now when I see a search results by Google, I see AI generated on top.
So, Google is right now under pressure (terrified) for the first time in a decade or may be in a two!
Intresting times ahead! Google's the king who is on the verge of being invaded for the first time. I'd love to see some open source project defeats it but it's not gonna be easy and early. It might take another decade or so to steal the throne. But, I'm sure we'll witness the demise of creepy Google empire to dust in the next 20 years.
What do you say?
When will be Google's ENDGAME?
AIs arrived and shook up Google's terrain, I myself often prefer to search for something using AI that provides references rather than searching on Google. There's no denying that Google was smart in incorporating all kinds of interconnected information into its search system, maps, news, YouTube, it's not difficult to easily find what you're looking for. I have already tried and still use some alternatives, such as DuckDuckGo. However, these require a little more work to find what you are looking for. Perhaps this is why Google still has this monopoly. I believe that in the near future and with new generations arriving, this monopoly will be shaken by the use of AIs, even more so with deepseek arriving and showing that high computational power is not needed to function well.

I feel like I barely use google anymore, except to find stuff I already know exists, or to use "site:reddit.com search".
I'm always going to perplexity or chatgpt now... the golden goose is coming to an end quickly once people get more comfortable using AI
