Sports serves as a great unifier across race, religion, creed, etc. and I think it is lost on a lot of people now. I hope kids look at a move like this and see it for what it is… an honor and a privilege that only champions get.
"Me not being there for them at that time was very selfish. Very selfish," Betts said. "I would not make that mistake again."

Indeed and there is a LOT of pressure on people in a position like his to "take a position".

Agreed its huge that he stood tall and like the arrival mentioned he is the only African American player on their roster right now who will be there.

Yeah. I never understood turning down the visit. It doesn't have to be about politics. It is recognition of excellence after the grind of a season.

The only only reason I could see it was if the President himself made some comment about the player and it was well-known. Then ya know you were personally attacked but that's the best I could come up with

There is a ton of pressure on athletes, especially black athletes to "make a statement" these days. Its not new. There was pressure on Jordan to do it in the 90s. He famously declined.
Honestly, I'm sick of it. I don't care about the politics of any of these people. The push to make everything political has not been a good thing for our culture. Political thought has its place. No doubt, but we shouldn't really be listening to misinformed or no info celebs for our politics. Most of them don't have anything of interest to add.
Anyone who has read anything I have written for more than a couple days knows I have a multitude of opinions on many topics. My views are far from mainstream but I can tell you this. Most of the people that know me never hear any of it. Most people just don't care that much. Many days I wish I was more like them. Alas, that's not me. If someone wants to talk about philosophy or political thought I'm game but no one likes the dude that forces politics into every conversation and has to make sure everyone knows where they stand. When people bring their politics to work they are usually being selfish. I see it fairly often and I think most people are sick of it.
I support people using their voice and platform but most of the time if feels forced and coerced rather than sincere. Personally, I would much rather focus on what unites us, than what divides us.

Since you mentioned Jordan one of my favorite things about him is how unfiltered and honest he had been. For instance he grew up as a kid where it was the white man keeping you down. Now he grew, learned, and overcame that bias but I mean he has admitted to hating white people for being white before.
Like you said politics has its place and as someone who works on the hill nothing grinds my gears more than having politics brought up in every facet of my life. To me sports are just a true free place for me.
Honestly something people have overlooked for years now is how Ovi, Captain of the freaking Washington DC Capitals is a die-hard Putin supporter. Given everything that has happened I'm amazed no one ever brings it up given this is politics USA here but 🤷🏼‍♂️
