How does one scale Nostr. This is the question I go to bed thinking about. Would love to hear how you'd do my job!

Great. We are asking ourselves the same questions about growing SN.
What is the best idea you have come up with so far?
reply
Getting newbies in to Nostr that are ideallogically aligned has been tougher than I would've thought. So the plan is to realllly lean into the people who are bootstrapping the network so far, which are Bitcoiners! We have some plans up our sleeves, but leaning into bitcoiners is what we will do. Glad that they happen to be some of the smartest, most interesting people around imho. You have any great plans for SN? My first time here.

Marketing to bitcoiners is a great way to quickly gain a small user base and then hit a brick ceiling.
reply
Great what are your ideas?

A few of us have been puttering around with a community driven marketing effort.
My ideas are:
  1. "you should really be on SN" targeted at bitcoiners or content creators that have never used the site who the value for value model likely appeals to.
  2. "Have another look at SN" for those that tried SN in the past but when it was smaller, or had less diverse subject matter being discussed etc.
Currently SN seems to be having the same problem you refer to about converting folks that seem like low hanging fruit so I think more targeted efforts may be required. But I am just doing this for fun to help out. I used to own my own business so I have familiarity with sales and marketing but it was a service business in meat space not really anything online (though we did have a website and do some online marketing). I am certainly no expert on growth in the digital realm.

Please don't get mad at me. I tried Primal a lot of times but went back to Amethyst because it feels faster and less buggy. Is it just me or does Primal have this problem? Anyway, Jack Dorsey on Nostr mentioned that Nostr is really buggy, and clients aren't to be blamed. Maybe it's just my perception, but I prefer Amethyst now. I'll be happy to switch in the future though. I'm still finding a better client!
reply
I'm so mad I just zapped you 1000 sats
I personally use multiple apps. Check back on Primal every once in a while. It's only going to get better.
I also know a few people who prefer amethyst as their daily driver. This is the beauty of Nostr! No one way to view the content and npubs can decide.

I really appreciate your positivity! You just gained a permanent user. I personally only prefer FOSS programs, and while they can be buggy and annoying sometimes, I still support them. Why? Because there are cool people working behind the scenes to change the world. I trust the people behind. Your positivity is exactly what I need! I'll provide feedback on any bugs. I'm going to switch to Primal now. Thanks! And thanks for the Sats as well!

Awesome, thanks for the support! Yes keep bug reports flowing please :)

Do you see Costa Rica/Uvita as a viable place to live medium/long-term. Would you consider raising kids there?
reply
yes and yes. I think this is a great place to raise kids. Such great nature. Access to local food. A great wave. And it's trending upwards in terms of development. THis place is extremely abundant and wouldn't be hard to survive in case of emergency situations..

Dont you think costa rica is incredibly overpriced? It feels like a robbery on every corner. Nature is amazing tho.
Outside of local fruit the food is also rather unexceptional in my opinion

Oh wow, what a nice surprise to see you here today!
I shared my thoughts about how scaling Nostr will affect decentralization yesterday:
There was also some discussion about this in #950309.
Are you considering how scaling Nostr might affect decentralization?
reply
Just read. Great take. Followed.
Nostr will be stress tested over and over again. We'll learn more as we go on. Will be fun to watch and be a part of.

Communities/chat apps. They exist, but haven't found one that feels useable yet..

I agree, I tried 0xchat and I didn't receive some messages in time which was a pretty bad experience ...

How much insight do you have into how does Primal work/collaborates with podcasters? What is your collaboration model?
reply
We haven't done much, but may start leaning into podcasters. stay tuned.

How are you measuring growth and what campaign/approach has worked the best so far to improve that number?
reply
We have daily, weekly, and montly active user numbers. Our biggest days were not from anything we have produced internally. They're from days like the tiktok ban, ian carrol coming over, and the telegram ceo being arrested.
I'm sure there will be more reminders of why we need nostr in the near future.

I keep hearing from people who are close to your team at Primal tell me your wallet is just Strike?
Then when I ask why that matters they say it’s KYC/AML with my email?
Is any of this true?
I always thought it was some sort of eCash wallet.
Also when adding edit button and orbit?

How did you get into nostr?
Is nostr how you discovered bitcoin?
reply
I'm a class of 17 bitcoiner and have been paying attention to the social media drama with Dorsey & Twitter. Hopped on Nostr shortly after the "jackening" and was living in Costa Rica during the 1st conference so I attended. Also used the Nostrasia conference as an excuse to travel to Japan with my wife and got to know many people involved in the space. I have always loved the idea of Nostr being the "everything app" built on an open protocol. And the idea of "fixing" social media sounds like an epic task. Happy to be putting my time towards this now.
reply
What are some of the books you'd recommend to a bitcoiner?
reply
Sovereign individual The way of the superior man The prophet and of course the bitcoin standard
reply
Way of the superior man annoyed the fuck out of me the first time. Second time, 6-7 year later, still not sold.
reply
What's an unpopular opinion you have about Nostr and the future of the protocol?
reply
Simply put, that it can't/won't scale. I think Primal is in a great position to bring the masses to Nostr. BUT it may be another app. Maybe one that doesn't exist yet. Who knows.
reply
0 sats \ 1 reply \ @ek 18h
Simply put, that it can't/won't scale.
Why do you think that?
reply
That's just the unpopular opinions I hear. I don't think that at all. Nostr is an idea who's time has come.
reply
I am just reading through this interesting conversation and I agree that there is a lack of adoption for Nostr, but it is not the apps because there are good ones and less good ones as with all products. The problem is as with a lot of new things people are scared to change. Everybody is stuck into their old banking systems, communication systems and are so used to it that they don’t look at other new options. I often talk to people about crypto, blockchain, web3, etc etc. And try to explain it to them but during the conversation you can already see that they will listen without taken anything in because their sceptical side takes over without them even given it a chance. That is the real problem getting people onboard.
reply
What's your favorite video project you've created for Primal and why?
reply
Probably the most recent video we made spending bitcoin at 21 different vendors using 21 different bitcoin lightning wallets in 1 day.
reply
Fuuuck, dope to see you here sir!
Love the Costa Rica paying-for-things vids
reply
Great to hear! It's actually happening down here and it's fun to show it.

Happy Primal customer here, just one request: make it easy for people to share their Nostr user everywhere, on their blog, on their X feed, on LinkedIn etc. This is usually called the follow button, here is the one from X:
There is even a UX that lets people customize the button and have it ready to go here: https://publish.twitter.com/#
This way people hear for the first time about both Nostr and Primal, and a few will actually follow us.

Do you think you'll put down root in Costa Rica? If not, where do you imagine you'll put down roots?
reply
This is as rooted as i've ever been. I'm still in the stack and rent phase of my life.
However, I am rooted here as I have a ton of friends and have been coming back for more than 3 years.
Things could change when I start a family. But i'll only be in places where I can surf :)

No question, just good to see you here! :)

when there is one person in charge of "growth" you already know the startup is shit. Translated that means not everyone is laserfocused on growth
just like when an old corporation has somebody in charge of "digitization" 🤣 that just means not everybody is working on a computer
reply
I like the idea of Nostr but I can't get into it because every web client I have tried has terrible performance. They're either turbo bloated JS bohemoths, or the network usage is so great that having the tab open brings down every connected device on my home network. Yes I've tried Primal recently, and it is one of the worst.
I get that there are some nice mobile clients but that's not for me. I hate touchscreen smartphones with a passion; it's gotta be a web app or TUI or I won't use it.

What's the probability that Nostr (and separately, Primal) fails?
ie the dream dies, convos and info travel on centralized platforms, nobody cares about zapping and censorship-res info? Basically, own nothing and be happy
reply
i'm not going anywhere. are you?
reply
Um, probs not
reply
Nostr reads has been an exciting development but still seems to suffer in terms of discoverability. How is Primal learning from and addressing the challenge?
reply
We think reads are an excellent tool to scale Nostr. We'll make it easier for people to publish and discover articles. Stay tuned. We're working on it.
reply
Keep it simple. I actually started diving deeper into nostr after switching to Primal as the wallet integration was seamless.
Simplicity triggers something in us humans as we tend to over-complicate things. Elegant design cuts through that. It’s what draws people in.
Who's the smartest person you've ever met?
reply
probably Jack Kruse
reply
According to you what is the biggest effort need to be repeated over and over to see a rapid adoption of Bitcoin?
reply
Number go up will always be the best "marketing" but on a local level, accepting/demanding bitcoin for your services. Spending bitcoin whenever a vendor accepts it
