For years, Amazon quietly ran a secret playbook hidden behind an innocent sounding name: Project Curiosity. At the center was a dummy company Big River Services International crafted solely to spy on competitors. Disguised as a neutral third-party seller, it peered into the guts of rival operations, extracting valuable insights to power Amazon’s ever growing empire. The scheme was so stealthy, not even insiders knew Amazon was behind it. Now exposed, it throws a spotlight on the dark arts of corporate warfare in Big Tech. With lawmakers already itching to break up monopolies, this secret operation could be the scandal that tips the scale. Amazon didn’t just watch the competition it wore their uniform.

if you read the Everything Store book, amazon lays out how it operates pretty well. partner, copy, squeeze.
they have been using 3pl sellers for years now to steal ideas. they see what is hot among their sellers, then launch their own private label brands of the same thing, undercutting the other smaller sellers. amazon will often demand manufacturing invoices from sellers for all kinds of reasons too
