The blurry line between medical ketamine use and abuse for Elon Musk’s favorite drug, explained.Ketamine seems to be everywhere — from the nightclub to the psychiatric clinic. Among its growing number of users is Elon Musk, who says he takes ketamine every two weeks for depression as prescribed by a doctor. He’s far from alone: More and more Americans are turning to ketamine for relief for their mental health struggles. But the New York Times reported recently that Musk was taking so much ketamine during last year’s presidential campaign, sometimes daily, that he reportedly told people it was causing him bladder problems, a known symptom of chronic ketamine use. Musk’s reported experience with the drug — from medical to possibly abusive — provides a window into ketamine’s growing popularity in the United States, and the paradox that popularity presents.Ketamine, both an anesthetic and a hallucinogen, was first synthesized in the 1960s and has long been used for surgery and veterinary medicine. More recently, it has shown remarkable effectiveness in alleviating symptoms of depression, particularly in treatment-resistant populations. Clinics administering the drug — which legally must be licensed by the government to provide intravenous infusions — are becoming more popular. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first ketamine-derived nasal spray for depression in 2019.

It's been almost a decade now, but a crew I used to hang out with in SF was very into using 'K' (as they called it) recreationally. The core of the group were aging, late 90's era ravers that had been taking molly very regularly for decades. Some of them used 'K' daily, often mixing it with adderall, which gave it a blue color that I thought was the color of ketamine for a long time.
One time I ended up at party with aging-raver-crew (in bernal heights iirc) that was also a polyamory meetup. One of the dudes there had a ketamine prescription and took a bigger dose than he was prescribed (he was a secondary partner to some woman that was significant in the effective altruism scene). I spent a lot of time talking to him and after he took the dose he said it was like he was "far away from everything and had to dig himself out to interact."
A few years later I learned that taking K regularly, and at high doses, can destroy the bladder irreversibly, and many people that get addicted end up peeing blood and having to wear diapers.

The more i learn about Elon the more issues come up. For example the gaming stuff where he was apparently using players to get him high rankings in games like Diablo 4.

I had no idea about the Ketamine stuff until yesterday when @bell_curve said it. But the connection between fake game ratings and drug abuse was one of the first thing I thought of....Its the type of thing a drug induced billionaire would think about while high and having delusions of grandeur (one of the effects of ketamine).

Yep totally makes sense. Has Rogan said anything about this do you know? I've never heard him once criticise Elon.

Matthew Perry consumed ketamine intravenously which is most dangerous imo
Most common method is nasal spray or snorting powder which is relatively innocuous imo

My friends who are still out at parties here in Europe are telling me it's an absolute epidemic. It's incredibly cheap, and people are just dishing it out all over the place!
