They're just gum nuts that you commonly find throughout Australia. I used acrylic paints which wasn't ideal as they stick together when they heat up. To try and prevent that and to give a glossier finish I used some kind of gloss spray paint that I found in the shed.

Our family has done a bit of traveling and part of the excitement has always been trying to discover local food specialties that are widely unknown outside the specific town/city, region, or country.

What localized food specialties have you enjoyed?

One such food item we have in our area that cannot be found outside Cincinnati, Ohio is called goetta (pronounced gh-eta). This breakfast side can best be described as a sausage-type mash that is pan fried to crispness kinda like fried bologna except the main ingredients are pork/beef fat and pin oats, making it less a meat than a hash… I am struggling to explain this, so here is a picture:

As with many local specialties, many people insist it is best homemade, but one can pick up tubes of the stuff in our big chain grocery. However, as soon as you leave the outer belt of the city, you won’t find it among the tube-packed breakfast and Italian sausages…

How Claude Code “is the ChatGPT moment repeated” — and why that’s awful news for software stocks

The relentless slide in software stocks last week continued through Friday, with the iShares Expanded Tech Software ETF (or IGV) trading to the downside and down nearly 6% over the course of the week.

The growing adoption of Claude Code, and more recently, the launch of Claude Cowork by Anthropic, has been an attention-grabbing moment as to the power of AI agents and how they can be housed and operated solely under one highly integrated user interface.

To say that software stocks have fallen out of favor would be an understatement, as having this much industry-specific market pain is incredibly rare.

Based on data going back to 2001, if IGV has fallen at least 5% over the past month, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF is typically also down between 5% to 6% over the same period.

Less than 3% of the time does SPY rise at least 1% while software stocks have gotten slammed — 28 instances in total, going back to August 2001 — and three of those are the past three sessions. 

A smattering of once high-flying, expensive software stocks, including Salesforce, Adobe, and Atlassian, have all seen their enterprise value compress to below 5x their estimated sales (from as high as 40x in 2021).

AI agents are able to develop software and handle the tasks and processes that served as the core value proposition of these companies. 

Doug O’Laughlin, president of SemiAnalysis, authored a thought-provoking piece in which he argued that “Claude Code is the ChatGPT moment repeated.”

The Takeaway

It’s a fire alarm moment for software, which risks being perceived as the horse-drawn carriage manufacturer the moment that engineers first seized the power of steam. 

“What I’m trying to say is that the traditional differentiation metrics will change,” O’Laughlin wrote. “Faster workflows, better UIs, and smoother integrations will all become worthless, while persistent information, a la an API, will become extremely valuable.”

As the marginal corporate dollar goes directly to AI rather than software or labor, it makes sense that investors’ dollars appear to be doing the same thing.

Backing up ecash is... hard... it's weird. At least it was!

How does ecash backup work?
---------------------------

Ecash is just data! so the actual ecash can easily be backed up by simply creating a copy of the data and storing it somewhere else. Easy right? Problem solved?

not quite.

The ecash backed up with this scheme is like a "snapshot". But what if you receive more ecash into your wallet? This newly received ecash won't be backed up!

Or even worse: You spend a large token that gives you back a bunch of change. This change is also not backed up!

Damn..... So basically to make this backup scheme work, you have to make a backup after EVERY transaction! This is obviously never gonna happen, so we need a better solution.

The answer is? ...... deterministic secrets
-------------------------------------------

To understand how this works, we need to take a look under the hood of the cashu protocol.

To create ecash, a wallet has to initiate the process by creating two randomly generated (huge) numbers.

**r**: the blinding factor

**x**: the secret

we then convert the secret number to a Point on the elliptic curve, by taking it's hash value.

this gives us **Y**

We then tweak our secret by adding our blinding factors Public Key. This will give us the **Blinded message (B\_)**

In the next step, we send our blinded message to the mint and ask the mint to sign it by multiplying it with **k**. k represents a private key that the mint controls and is used for only one denomination (for example **1 sat**). Usually the mint will only sign if we either destroy another valid ecash token with the same value, or we show proof of payment of a lightning invoice.

After the mint has signed, we can now "unblind" the blind signature **C\_** with the initial blinding factor **r** and the mints 1 sat public key **K .** This will give us **C**, the signature.

Together with the initial secret **x,** we can now proof to the mint that they signed **x** with **C**, without them being able to correlate it with the blinded message they signed! So, the secret **x** together with the signature **C** is what represents the ecash!

### deterministic?

So far, the ecash has been created randomly. That's great, but it's impossible to recover. Instead, what we can do is derive the initial numbers from a bip39 seed phrase we all know and love, and use a bip32 derivation path to create unique but recreatable blinded messages. We simply increase a counter for each new secret and blinding factor, and we can generate new numbers deterministically!

In case we lose our wallet, we can now restore the ecash via the seed phrase. We start out by generating a bunch of blinded messages derived from the seed phrase:

Now, we can match our messages against the mints database and download all corresponding blind signatures.

And that's it! that's how we can use a seed phrase to recover lost ecash! Important to know is, that we cannot create a seed phrase after creating the ecash. The seed phrase must come first! or the ecash won't be recoverable.

I've implemented this on cashu-ts now, which is a library that is used in many cashu wallets out there ([nutstash](https://alpha.nutstash.app), eNuts, [cashu.me](https://cashu.me), minibits ...)! So I think we can expect this feature coming soon TM.

Di$tract€d driving: The rise of in-car ads

The modern car can parallel park itself, power a house during a blackout, pick its driver up from a parking lot, and remotely control a PlayStation 5. So does it really come as a surprise that it might also try to earn a little commission on selling you a sandwich?

Cars, like many other functional utilities now decked out with large connected screens, are quickly becoming an advertising gold mine. 

That potential revenue is leading automakers to test the controversial addition of in-car ads — and likely playing into the growing wave of automakers scrapping popular phone-mirroring systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from their models.

In-car ads appear pretty subtle, for the most part — an in-map suggestion that a Dunkin’ Donuts is nearby on an early morning commute, or a gas station promotion on the infotainment screen when the tank is nearing empty — but as vehicles become more sophisticated, their ads do, too.

German-based driver interaction platform 4screen is at the forefront of the in-car ad industry. Partnered with 16 vehicle brands, including Stellantis, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Mercedes, 4screen says its technology works on all infotainment systems (including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). 

The company is operational in a dozen countries, having launched in the US in 2024. The majority of 4screen’s marketing is currently geared toward utility: EV charging locations, supermarkets, or after-sale verticals like maintenance suggestions. Ads, CEO Fabian Beste says, are an obvious next step for today’s cars. Currently, 4screen says its ads result in a 3% to 7% boost to its cars parking at advertised locations. 

The Takeaway

Ford has filed multiple patents for in-car advertising systems in recent years. One would use a car’s cameras to read nearby billboards and display similar ads on its infotainment screen; another could listen to conversations in the car, parsing for relevant key words. Statista estimates there are 400 million “connected cars” currently on roads worldwide. The Center of Automotive Management, a German research institute, estimates “in-car e-commerce” revenues could reach between $100 and $120 per car, per year by 2030, creating an addressable market worth more than $50 billion.
