Bitcoin Island, Boracay Philippines has passed a big round number of 100 businesses on-boarded. These businesses are all accepting bitcoin via pouch.ph lightning wallet.  If you have been following these updates, you will notice that the rate of adoption is accelerating.

We have had reports of random bitcoiners following this map as a treasure hunt buying a drink at every venue.

With the addition of more local markets, it is realistic to live only on bitcoin as a local.  We make it a point to always shop with our vendors, so our fiat usage is near zero at this point.

Our crew of gig workers are paid in bitcoin, some cash out a little to fiat. However, some sell us fiat to get "pouch money" because it is easier to remit to their family in other cities with bitcoin.

However, I don't think that ~20% BTC adoption should be viewed as a failure, quite the opposite.

Maybe not everywhere accepts it, and true, waiters will actually try and say they don't accept it when they do, but it IS possible to live just on Bitcoin in El Salvador.  I'm doing it right now.

This is an unconventional convention. We think that the most important things at a convention happen in the small groups that form in the hallways of the events. We are focusing on making that happen.

3rd world countries. How to handle altcoins (which drives the adoption)?

Philippines got the 3rd spot on the highest crypto adoption but mainly due to altcoins and games like axie infinity. I just became a non-altcoiner this year, a maxi some may say. But it's quite challenging to navigate talking to people, even those who are already in the crypto space.


Even the Bitcoin people known BitcoinIsland in Boracay is mostly an altcoin area and not really bitcoin main. The foreign national who is popularing the term, who owns Pouch.ph, is pushing all crypto and not bitcoin exclusive.


I'm still supporting his vision in part since he knows the difference of Bitcoin and he's doing that business model since that's the better way to gain adoption here.


Any tips on this? Oh and I just started using lightning and loving it, would like to get some zaps. Thanks in advance for the tips and zaps!

4 differing opinions about Bitcoin

Need to teach my students how to differentiate fact from opinion. Since they are interested to learn about Bitcoin, I used my experience to write four opinion pieces for them so that they can practise matching the individual’s opinion to the question.

Opinion 1:

I was skeptical about Bitcoin at first because I read that it was used to pay for items on the Dark Web. Nonetheless, when the social media manager chanced upon my blog and invited me to be an influence for their crypto exchange, I thought I should be open-minded and give Bitcoin a try. My son was then a baby, so I was motivated to find out more about it because I expected Bitcoin to be the currency of the future. I could only guide him properly on how to navigate the digital space if I have experience with Bitcoin myself.

Opinion 2:

I understand that Bitcoin is a high-risk, high-reward investment. However, if we see it as a store of value, it could be used as another form of mobile payment and make our lives more convenient. For example, I once visited Boracay in the Philippines. I was amazed at how I could pay for things using the Lightning Network. After this positive experience, I can’t wait to visit Lugano, Switzerland one day and use the Lightning Network there!

Opinion 3:

I never invest money that I can’t afford to lose. I don’t have much spare cash in the first place. Luckily, companies like Coinbase and Revolut enable their users to earn some cryptocurrencies after going through their Learn and Earn lessons. What I do is to attempt these lessons and convert the cryptocurrencies I obtain to Bitcoin. I know it doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but hey, every sat counts.

Opinion 4:

Did you know that El Salvador was the first nation to recognise Bitcoin as its national currency in September 2021? This was what sparked my interest in Bitcoin. I also read from the news that Bitcoin ATMs are rather common in some countries like America and Canada. So, I think Bitcoin will become increasingly common in the future. That’s why I acquire some Bitcoin now because I want to stay ahead of this trend.

Bitcoin. Its adoption differs from country to country. Take for instance BTC ATMs. They are prohibited in Singapore but occupy prime real estate in Japan (see below). Though it is technically not a country, Hong Kong hosts BTC ATMs at its laundromats. This is an ongoing compilation of what you can do with Bitcoin in various countries. Croatia - You can buy BTC on ATM machines and at the post office. You can spend your BTC on its largest online marketplace called Konzum.

New Zealand - You can pay for a can of Coke from the vending machines with BTC.

Every St Patrick's Day, as the world loses its mind and forgets that to be Irish is to be blighted, blasted, woe-bitten and many other miserable fates beside, I like to take with me a small pitcher of whiskey and draw out from beneath my pillow that worthy and marvelous work known as [An Béal Bocht](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_B%C3%A9al_Bocht) which has otherwise been translated and known amongst the heathen as [The Poor Mouth](https://archive.org/details/poormouth0000flan/).

Now, I will tell you, I don't read this worthy text for edification or because it is even enjoyable. And sure as I don't read it for the humorous qualities it lacks. I don't read it to remind myself of my heritage, having that distinctly ambiguous pleasure--due to somewhere around half the world's population--of claiming Gaelic heritage. I hardly read the book to read it, either. Nor even do I take its small, smudged pages into my hands to have an excuse to drink an extra glass of whiskey on this day of my heritage.

No, you blessed people. The reason I glance at this tome is the great and wonderful truth contained between what is its torn cover and its creased back page. To wit: I read it to remind myself that to be Irish is to be cursed.

Therefore, and as a civic service to all you fools who think it's a good idea to gird your loins in green and drink beer that tastes like it has been burnt over a fire by some old man who forgot what he was doing, I am taking here the time to bless you all with a little bit of the wisdom contained within this book. May it serve as a warning.

Firstly, the Y2k of bitcoin and elephant *not* in the room: **Tether**. Critics like parroting mainstream talking points and march on about Tether’s inevitable implosion because they don’t understand Tether is like a plover bird to the U.S, the bird that crocodiles open their mouths for, so it can peck their killer mandibles clean. It’s a symbiotic evolution. Tether isn’t going anywhere, not unless chartered banks encroach on their business and slowly absorb it. Not only is Tether a large buyer of T-bills, but they also tour the world dollarizing the living shit out of it. They’re greasing the rails everywhere, from being the official currency of the US-backed Myanmar unity government, proliferating in Africa (curiously in places where China is trying to gain footholds for natural resources with their debt and Yuan, including BRIC nation South Africa), to capitalizing too many bitcoin companies to name.


Tether's daily trading volume averages $52B, which on most days is about as much as every cryptocurrency in the world—including bitcoin—COMBINED.


Tether settled $18.2T last year. That’s almost as much as Mastercard ($14T) and Visa ($7.7T) COMBINED.

That’s just Tether. PayPal is working on a stablecoin. JPMorgan has its onyx platform in beta. Several smaller banks are hiring for stablecoin development. We already know USDC, Dai, etc. And Moody’s (the financial ratings agency) is working on a global stablecoin rating framework.

Tether, by expanding so rapidly during the first part of Bitcoin’s life, when 92% of bitcoin’s total supply was issued, allowed the U.S. market to make sure the value being inscribed into the protocol would be related to the dollar system. The BTC/USD pair dominates trading volume to the point the game is over. This pair, wether it’s USD or USD equivalents (stablecoins) has won. This means the U.S. has cornered a large piece of the energy market. How? Because in order to mine, you need both silicon (ASICs) and energy. I’m not talking about the mining economy of scale—which is access to capital and cheap electricity—I’m talking about the capex (capital expenditure). So if you expand your energy and acquire silicon to mine, you get bitcoin, which is tied directly to the USD. Thusly, any expansion of hashpower energy, is an expansion of the USD. This is the *Softwar* Jason Plowery should've talked about, instead of 400 pages misnomering PoW's usefulness.


This perhaps will make more sense when stablecoins begin proliferating on the Lightning Network via L1’s atomic unit (satoshi) in a brilliant sat seignorage scheme, especially when anyone in the world can access the Lightning Network with just a phone. *Thunderboise* 🤪. Perhaps something wicked this way comes, but in my opinion this will *fix the money fix the world* over the **longterm**. 



I reject the notion that the USD will suddenly die, and reject the notion that bitcoin will transition the world’s value without Trojan Horsing the USD in an intimate way. Also, while bitcoin security budget saviors seem interested in thrusting inscriptions, forks, chains, and their expedience inside the womb of a 15-year-old protocol, I’m thinking the future of [most] mining hashpower should converge on something more legally tenable. A post for another time.
