What was your first clue you were no longer as young as you thought you were?

We were coming home from a road trip, he had to pee, so I pulled over so he could water the ditch weeds.

He got out. Shut the door. Turned around got immediately back in the car. I said “thought you had to pee so bad" while he is saying “drive, just drive"

Next morning, the local news story about two escaped prisoners, in the old barn right where I pulled over to let him pee.

What was a time when your child was right about a gut feeling?

I got a phone call from a person claiming to represent the US Government. He wanted to speak to my (adult) daughter, but I was suspicious, and asked him for details. He said that she had missed jury duty, and was about to be arrested, but if we acted quickly, we could avert the damage.

I told him that I wanted to protect her, and that, if possible, it would be best if she never even learned about the problem. What could I do? He said that for a $500 fee, they could expedite a document that would avoid all prosecution. I said I would do that; how do we proceed? He said we could meet at a local CVS Pharmacy; he would bring the forms, I could sign them, and he would file them. But he had to get the funds in cash, not cheque or credit card.

I agreed to do this, but (I said) I needed to have his cell phone number so I could find him. He was reluctant, but I insisted. He handed his phone over to his boss. I was so sincere, and so compliant, that he met my request, and gave me the cell phone number.

I then told the man that I was reporting the scam, and that his cell phone number would soon be inoperative. If it is possible for them to trace who had bought it, then he would be in even deeper trouble.

He got very upset with me. He asked me if I was a psychologist. (That’s because my counter-scam had seemed professional to him.) We chatted for about ten minutes. I told him that his scam was unfair and harmful. He responded by saying that he only took money from people who had cheated the government. I suggested that he get a better job. He said he had tried, but six months ago he had been released from prison, and all prospective employers had turned him down.

He finished with some chilling words: “You realize, of course, that I know where you live.”

When I was young, I often went to Japan.
In recent years, I have visited China frequently.

Generally speaking, people in these two countries are very friendly and enthusiastic, and are willing to help others, such as foreigners like me.

However, the feeling they give me is indeed very different.

Let’s talk about the Japanese first
The Japanese are the most "polite" people. They always greet you politely when they see you. Will proactively say "Hello", "Welcome", "Sorry to trouble you", "Sorry". They like to express enthusiasm to others by bowing.
When you ask them for help on the road, in a store, or in a restaurant, they usually respond enthusiastically.
But once you become familiar with Japan. You will find that the enthusiasm and politeness of the Japanese often stay on the surface, giving you the illusion of enthusiasm.
When you really need a lot of their help, they'll tactfully avoid it.
For example: "I'm very sorry, I don't know about this"， "Sorry, I don't have this either" ，"I'm really sorry, you can look it up on Google"。

Generally speaking, the Japanese give me a feeling of "hot on the outside and cold on the inside".
Polite and kind words are often spoken, and ceremonial movements such as bowing are very frequent.
But the sense of boundaries between people is very strong, and the help they are willing to give to others is very limited. At the same time, they also have a "don't cause trouble to others" mentality.
This makes "asking for help" an unpopular behavior in Japan.

The experience in China is exactly the opposite of Japan.
When I first went to China, I felt that Chinese people didn’t care much about “politeness”. When they see you, they won't even say "hello" or "welcome", and rarely say "sorry". Even when you walk into a store or restaurant, no one says "Welcome" to you. Even if Chinese people are friends, they don't have any etiquette when meeting each other. I have never even seen Chinese people bow to each other or to me.
Their biggest ceremonial gesture is shaking hands or patting you on the shoulder.
Compared with the Japanese, the Chinese have much less ceremonial language and actions. So, I initially thought that Chinese people were not that enthusiastic.
But after spending a few days in China, I found that Chinese people's personalities are completely different from Japanese people.
They are sparse in superficial words and actions, but often provide you with more practical help.
If you simply ask for directions on the road, they will not only tell you the result clearly, but some will even interrupt their own itinerary to accompany you to a certain key destination before waving goodbye to you. In my work, a person who never said "hello" or "welcome" to me quietly gave me great help when I encountered difficulties. When I went to thank him with a gift, he got angry and said, "Don't do these false things, friends don't need this."

The feeling given to me by the Chinese people is that they are "cold on the outside and hot on the inside". They seem to abandon too many polite words and don't like physical gestures. But they are often more willing to provide in-depth help, especially when they know you are a "guest" or treat you as a friend. When faced with others asking for help, Chinese people feel that they have been trusted. Some Chinese friends even explained to me in casual chat that they believe that "a great favor cannot be thanked without words". True help and friendship do not require words of thanks, it is only correct to keep them in mind.

In short, as a foreign visitor.

You have to understand the two completely different "enthusiasms" of the Chinese and the Japanese. Adapt to the local culture and customs and you will be popular.

When it comes to investing in Bitcoin and cryptocurrency, most people are trying to find a way to change their lives financially. There has long been a theory about how long it takes to build long-lasting wealth in this market. During your first full cycle, you can make enormous gains. In your second full cycle, you can become rich. Finally, in your third cycle, you can obtain generational wealth.

Since Bitcoin has come into existence this has always been the case, but that opportunity will not last forever. It’s natural that as the price of Bitcoin soars and reaches new heights, it will begin to move at a slower pace. The truth is that we have already begun to see this happen. During Bitcoin’s first cycle, it went up by more than 10,000x. The next cycle saw it go up hundreds of times. Finally, during the last cycle from the bottom to the top, Bitcoin rose by nearly 20x.

Early investors in Bitcoin had a unique opportunity in that this was the first time in recent memory that retail buyers front-run Wall Street, VCs, and countries in the market. Something important to keep in mind is that throughout the entire duration of SEC essentially making crypto enemy number one. Throughout that process, Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that they have said without a doubt that it isn’t a security.

Is this the last chance at a life-changing wealth with Bitcoin?

I once became hopelessly lost in the city of Chengdu, which is in central China. Getting lost in a city wasn’t anything new to me, I felt this was the only way to really see a city, you only know a place once you need to find your way out of it. None-the-less my wife and I after spending the day just walking anyway we wanted were quite lost, to the point that we couldn’t find where we thought were on a map.

Eventually, I had to ask someone for directions. In the part of the city we were, it was surprisingly quiet. I saw a woman standing near the street waiting to cross. Now, the problem I had was almost no one we met while we were there spoke English, so I wasn’t sure how I was going to ask her for help. I came up behind and said “excuse me” to which she didn’t answer, after the second attempt I walk around her and said “excuse me” again, to which she got a huge fright, I thought she was going to give me a fat slap in the face, but I also saw she was actually on a phone call.

After apologising profusely in some broken Mandarin I learnt while there and walking away, she started shouting at me. Well, it wasn’t shouting as I later discovered but let’s just say talking very loudly and gesturing me to ask what I wanted. So, after showing her the map with an “I don't know where I am” expression. She then put her hand up palm out in a manner telling me to wait, quite sternly.

Next thing, she whips out her phone, makes a call, and starts what sounds like a massive argument with someone on the other side, then suddenly stops and passes me the phone and says quietly sternly “take it” (well that’s what I think she said). I take the phone and say “Hi - my name is Gert”, on the other side is a male voice and in the calmest most perfect English says: “Hi - I’m the brother of the lady you just spoke to, she called me and said it looks like you’re lost. If you can tell me where you’re trying to go, then I can tell her how to help you.” - to which I reply “Thank you very much ..” and proceed to explain where we want to go. He then tells me to hand the phone back to his sister. After handing it back to her, they again proceed to have what I interpret as a huge argument. Once done, shes hands the phone back to me and he proceeds to explain how and where I need to go, to find a taxi and specifically how and to instruct the taxi driver. Thanking him and apologising to have wasted his time. He graciously says he didn’t mind and says it’s not every day his sister calls him in Hong Kong…..

He was in Hong Kong 1650 Km / 1025 Miles away and I’m standing somewhere in Chengdu on the street side next to his sister. After giving her the phone back and saying thanking in Mandarin a few times, her face changes and she flashes me this huge and incredibly warm smile.

See, what I learnt was that often one judges by your cultural norms, and cultures across the globe are quite different. What I had interpreted as cross or angry, even rude was actually just matter-of-fact and what I had interpreted as an argument was what I later learnt, just the exuberant and honest manner in which many Chinese converse. The fact of the matter was this lady had no problem just calling her brother across the country for no other reason than she needed him to help these tourists who look lost.

Don’t judge another culture or as in this case the Chinese in relation to your cultural norms, judge on someone's actions. I backpacked through China from top to bottom (literally) and my general interaction was one of warmth and welcome.

What do people get wrong about the Chinese?

I think It depends if you invested for long term or short term. As a long term investment i would keep it and forget about day to day market prices.

If you invested as a way of earning short term profit then this is very different situation. Currently it is not wise to buy/sell cryptocurrencies as short term investment unless you are experienced in trading and understand the market.

Should we sell my bitcoin before it drops anymore?


Ninety-nine percent of people enter the Bitcoin market for the same reason. With the hopes and dreams of being able to change their financial lives forever, and maybe even become rich.

But something strange happens the longer that you are in the market. You fall down the rabbit hole of Bitcoin, begin to believe that Bitcoin has the power to change the world, and you want to be a part of that change. There is a saying that once you start to understand Bitcoin, there is no going back to how you looked at the world before. You now see the world for what it actually is, and your naive blinders have been taken off.

After spending enough time as a Bitcoiner, you begin to become a part of the community. A place where HODLing your Bitcoin for the long-term, or possibly forever is respected. Selling out of your position, taking profits, or even having conviction that sometimes wavers is seen as being weak or having paper hands. People may say that you were mentally weak, or weren’t worthy enough to reap the rewards that Bitcoiners will be able to obtain later on.


The hard truth is that sometimes the Bitcoin market can be a difficult place. There is peer pressure that makes you feel like you are in middle school again. HODLers or Bitcoin maxis are part of the popular group, and anyone else is shunned. Being declared that they aren’t true Bitcoiners.

With that said you need to always remember why you are in this market. While it’s true that we would love to change the world to make it a much better place. But, we must first concentrate on our own survival. The world out there currently is difficult to just make ends meet. If you have a chance to change your life financially you should take it.

Nothing in life or Bitcoin is guaranteed. Having the ability to pay off your student loans, credit cards, and escape from the heavy burden of debt can be life-changing. Being able to finally have a financial cushion, and no longer be living paycheck to paycheck. Or finally having a nest egg saved, and having hope to be able to retire. These are all incredible things to sell your Bitcoin for, and you should never be ashamed or embarrassed to do so.

But there is the never-ending dilemma of if you should sell your Bitcoin for short-term gains, or take the risk and HODL for the chance to become rich. I’ll be honest with you, this is the situation that I struggle with the most at times. Before entering the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency market, I was deeply in debt and had a grim financial future. Being able to retire was something I had already decided would be impossible for me.

Thankfully investing in Bitcoin has taught me the skills to be able to turn my life around, but I still remember how difficult life was. This makes me sympathize with anyone who was to sell quickly to improve their lives. There is no shame in doing so, and I would actually recommend it in many cases. After all, nothing is guaranteed in Bitcoin, and it could go to zero someday.

However, if there is any way that you are able to hold on, protect your Bitcoin, and keep it for several years. I truly believe that not only could it change your life forever, but could make you rich. All of those predictions about Bitcoin eventually causing the largest transfer of wealth the world has ever seen could be more likely than you know.

At the end of the day, you just need to do what is right for you. We are all in a different financial situation and has several different factors. Your debt, age, goals, marital status, having children, and even your health.

Should I sell my Bitcoin when it goes up or hold onto it?

In recent years, many blockchains have transitioned to the proof of stake consensus mechanism, driven by factors like environmental concerns, energy efficiency, and overall system enhancements. Bitcoin is one of the few major cryptocurrencies still employing proof of work. While some view this as outdated, proof of work might not be as disadvantageous as commonly perceived. In fact, there are compelling reasons to believe it’s both secure and environmentally beneficial in the long run.

In 2008, Bitcoin emerged as the first cryptocurrency, marking the debut of blockchain technology and igniting an industry now worth trillions. It introduced the world to a decentralized, trustless, peer-to-peer electronic cash system — a groundbreaking innovation. At the heart of Bitcoin’s design is its unique Nakamoto consensus mechanism. Here, validators, known as miners, compete to process the next set of transactions on the blockchain. Each miner expends electrical and computational resources to solve a cryptographic puzzle. The first to succeed earns the privilege to forge the subsequent Bitcoin block, reaping transaction fees and a bonus block reward.

Proof of work is commonly criticized for several reasons, namely its gross and inefficient use of electricity. By some estimates, it uses almost as much electricity as the entire country of the Netherlands or ⅓ of Australia’s consumption. This has been a primary argument against some companies adopting Bitcoin, especially with the rise in the ESG movement over the past few years. Proof of work is commonly seen as a legacy blockchain consensus mechanism, only utilized for historical reasons and because of Bitcoin’s difficulty in upgrading.

Though these arguments have been used for years by mainstream media and critics of Nakamoto consensus, Bitcoiners stand firm in the belief that proof of work is a feature, not a bug. One major part of their argument is that proof of work is much more decentralized and trustless than proof of stake. For example, for someone to get access to the Ethereum ecosystem, they have no choice but to buy Ethereum from another person or entity, which could be prohibitive. On the other hand, Bitcoin can be acquired by using mining hardware and one of the most common currencies on Earth, electricity, and simply buying the digital asset. Anyone with an internet connection can mine Bitcoin, and though a miner may be expensive, it costs less than the 32 ETH to run an Ethereum validator.

Another argument centers around the centralization of mining, as it has led to the centralization and conglomeration of mining pools, where users group their computing power and share the network rewards. Currently, two mining pools could collude to take over the Bitcoin network. Though this seems threatening, Ethereum faces a similar issue with their liquid staking derivates platforms like Lido, which currently controls 32% of the total Ethereum staked. Since only ⅓ of Ethereum is required to reorganize the chain, granted at the cost of losing that ⅓ ETH, Ethereum is in a similarly precarious situation.

Though Bitcoin mining becomes centered around large-scale operations with warehouses full of miners, this is the economically most efficient approach as decided by the free market. Part of this optimization is using the cheapest energy available — clean energy. Indeed, some estimates place the amount of Bitcoin miners using green energy at higher than 50%, far greater than most industries. Bitcoin may use 0.2% of the world’s total energy capacity, but this number is nominal compared to the value it generates and the energy expenditure of our current financial system, according to Bitcoiners.

Proof of work is certainly not without its problems. Bitcoin’s block time is 10 minutes, partly due to its reliance on probabilistic finality and the rule of the longest chain being the canonical blockchain. On the other hand, proof-of-stake blockchains can achieve near-instant transaction finality and are much better positioned to be an internet currency. Yes, solutions like Bitcoin’s Lightning Network allow for free and near-instant transactions, but they rely on user adoption and do not support the long-term transaction volume of the Bitcoin network.

Even though proof of work has been condemned as an inefficient and polluting byproduct of Bitcoin’s legacy, the truth is much more nuanced. While it uses a lot of electricity, it provides a floor for the value of Bitcoin and is incentivized to be as cheap and clean as possible. Additionally, it gives anyone with internet access the capability to contribute to the network as a miner and earn Bitcoin in the process without having first to buy some from someone else. Proof of work will likely never leave Bitcoin, so we might as well break the narrative about it being such a bad thing.

What does it feel like to be rich?
I come from a family that I was brought up to think of as "comfortable". Everyone in my family worked, no one lived ostentatiously, and neither I nor my siblings were raised to be 'rich kids'. While my family was clearly respected by everyone, it was quite apparently because of the general integrity, intelligence and public-mindedness of the way everyone behaved. Our family name was known in some professional circles, but not in the society pages, or to people in the street.

Nevertheless, it was constantly drilled into our heads from the very beginning that we were extraordinarily lucky on every conceivable spectrum: living in the a free country, in the 21st century, with a strong nuclear and extended family, in good heath, with great educations (I went to a great public school for seven years, followed by private school), the ability to travel, a house full of books, and most every rational thing that a kid could want. Thanksgiving was a major holiday in our home, with heartfelt, self-aware toasts about our immense good fortune.

Because of this, we were told by my parents, we had an obligation to give back to society, to produce more than we consumed, to think of others even more than ourselves. We were taught that money is a tool, and a magnifier...that's all. It's a tool that can be used for good or for bad, and that it has no intrinsic virtue or vice. In fact, we were all brought up to completely disassociate "money" from anything having to do with the way we lived our life. We were not expected to be anything in particular, or make any particular amount of money...but we certainly were expected to do *something*, and to do it to the absolute best of our abilities. The explicit understanding for all of us was that when we grew up our lifestyles should be "appropriate", without regard to whether we were a poet or a Master of the Universe.

When I proposed to the woman who would become my wife, she had clearly come from a less economically privileged background, but with almost exactly the same philosophy from her parents. I had been supported completely by my parents all through college and graduate school, with an allowance that continued even after I had gotten my first job; she had not taken a penny from her parents after the age of seventeen, and had put herself through college and graduate school while supporting her siblings. She was hardworking and frugal, and had managed to save quite a bit of cash from her salary by the time we married; I was hardworking and "comfortable" thanks to my family. Despite different backgrounds, we both considered ourselves to be relatively comparably well-off, and our marriage as something of a union of equals. My wife paid for our lovely, intimate wedding completely out of her savings; my parents paid for a larger reception the following evening.

It was only a year or two later that I understood just how "comfortable" we were...when the first issue of Forbes magazine came out with a list of the 400 richest families in America. And guess who was on it? Soon thereafter, an event happened that triggered the revelation of some previously anonymous charitable contributions which now had the family name attached. Well, not just 'some'. A lot. And big. Well known and highly visible. If I told you the name, you'd likely recognize it.

How did this change in perception affect me and my siblings? The truth is, not much at all. We had been raised with such consistent values for so long, and with money being generally available but not overwhelming, that when things became more visible (and each of us received direct access as adults to something like nine figures of cash, with more to come) there was nothing to change. All of us lived, and continue to live, very well, with "very well" being defined as something just north of a highly compensated doctor or lawyer or banker; NOT like Paris Hilton or Larry Ellison or Donald Trump. All of us work full time, extremely hard, and are near the tops of our respective professions, which include academia, business and public service. None of us felt any particular need to change things.

So, what does it feel like to be rich? (because, I guess if you want to be sorta technical about it, I'm rich. Quite.) In our case it simply means that money isn't generally a factor that needs to be worried about, at all. If we want to take a vacation (anywhere), get tickets (to anything), purchase a gadget or a collectable (of any kind), support a worthy cause (in any area), we simply do it. We have access to a private jet, which is incredibly convenient when you really need it...but the vast majority of our travel is commercial. We have personal assistants and support staff for some of our activities...but no full time cook, butler or chauffeur, just a cleaning lady who comes in once a week. Some of us have nicer cars than others; I personally drive a 20 year old car with 150,000 miles on it. We are all involved with charitable causes, but consider our major contributions to them to be our 'wisdom and work', rather than our wealth.

Most importantly, for all of those in our family, our overriding goal is to do as good a job in raising our own children as our parents did with us, where money is simply a tool and a magnifier, no more and no less. I personally work 12-14 hours a day, six or seven days a week, and hope to set an example of hard work, conscientiousness and integrity that our children will follow. In addition to my day job, I spend nearly equal amounts of time (my most precious asset) giving back, through social and charitable service, teaching and mentoring, and, yes, frequently answering questions here on Quora in areas in which I am knowledgeable.

Having read all the other answers to this question, it seems to me that the bottom line is...my parents were right: money is simply a magnifier of who you are and how you have been raised.

What does it feel like to be rich?

I made $30M from my previous tech company.

For me, the most surprising thing about being rich is that it's an incredibly isolating experience. What I mean by that is you can't really complain about your problems except within your small circle of rich friends. Otherwise, you will sound like a douchebag. Even if you do, non-rich people can't really empathize with you.

There are a few problems associated with being rich such as general (lack of) motivation for work, family/friends asking for money, worry for how to motivate kids, spouse with different attitudes toward life after getting rich, potential spouse being a gold digger, unexpected jealous reaction from friends/family, pressure to deal with more complex tax, estate planning and investment planning and etc.

The joy of "set for life" doesn't seem to offset the anxiety from hoarding the huge sum of money. In addition, when you don't work because you are rich but can't hang out with your friends who have to work during the week, you feel like an outcast of society.

Overall, being rich is very isolating and that's the most surprising thing I have experienced.

What is the biggest surprise about getting rich?

I met my ex-girlfriend on Tinder. We matched, we met, we were together for almost two years. We broke up two years ago and I haven’t been with anyone since. What I learned is that even when you feel ready, you can’t skip to the end.

You cannot find love by looking for it.

The moment you start searching, you’ve already twisted yourself into a pretzel that’s nothing but a poor copy of the awesome you you actually are. That’s why online dating rarely works.

Love starts with loving yourself. It’s one of those “when the student is ready, the teacher appears” kind of things. Like attracts like.

And if you don’t think you’re awesome, work on it. Do something for yourself. Go to the gym. Start a business. Buy a book. Paint. Whatever gets you closer to being someone you would want to date yourself. The only person you are guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with is you.

What's the hardest truth of life?

This is going to be fun. But let me tell you, its more like what I thought she was like and how she actually is…

When we first met through parents, she looked like a shy girl next door. She was smiling and feeling awkward a lot. After we got married and a little more comfortable, she walks around house naked, has 0 level of shyness.
I thought I was getting cold feet. She was being forced. Turned out she had insisted to her parents that she wanted to get married, like literally told them in a complete sentence, ‘Dad, I want to get married. I don't have any boyfriend right now. Search a groom for me.’ I'm not even exaggerating, her parents tell this story all the time.
I thought she didn't like talking. WRONG. She NEVER shuts up. If she does, I'll wake up. Lol, I've started to enjoy it.
She's frigid. WRONG. Once comfortable, she's a freak.
She's so slow and, unhappy person. Wrong. She is hyperactive and becomes happy just about at nothing.
She doesn't like me. Big time wrong. Turned out, she has liked me since day 1. She loves me.
She'll probably never fight or argue. Wrong. Loveeess to argue, though I don't like to admit it much, she's usually right about things. And people too.
Is probably passive aggressive. Wrong. Tells me when things bother her, almost immediately.
Is dumb. Wrong. She's really smart.
She does not feel much. Wrong. All of her emotions are intense.
Is very serious. Wrong. Very very wrong. Can't go on a day without lame jokes. Lame jokes are lifeline to her. She knows they are lame but loves it.
As for the changes, she hasn't changed much. Can motherhood be included? Anyways, it suits her well.

She's staying at her parents place with our boy. I miss her. Its been just a day though. I guess, I'll call now.
