Happy Whitepaper Day

hasherstacker

The white paper turns 18 today. On October 31, 2008, Satoshi sent nine pages to a cryptography mailing list, and those nine pages are still the whole rulebook.

They were written for cryptographers, people he needed to take Bitcoin seriously, so the paper is dense and technical. For the day I made an 11 minute video that goes through every section, in order: transactions, the timestamp server, proof of work, the network, incentives, reclaiming disk space, SPV, combining and splitting value, privacy, the calculations and the conclusion. Each idea is drawn as a simple diagram, then shown working on Visualize Bitcoin, the live 3D machine some of you already know (#1597325).

Satoshi narrates. The voice is AI, and every word he says comes from the paper itself. Nothing is added that is not in those nine pages.

If you know someone who never read the paper becauhis is for them. And if you spot anything I gotwrong, tell me here.

Visualize Bitcoin V3.1: the live 3D Bitcoin machine now has people around it

Bitcoin explained as a live 3D machine

V3.1 is out, and the machine now has people around it: chat, a live forum with Lightning tips, multiplayer, profiles with Lightning login. Here is what changed: https://stacker.news/items/1597325

Follow up to #1554367

Two months ago I posted Visualize Bitcoin here: Bitcoin explained as a live 3D machine, running on live network data. I ended that post saying it would get a lot bigger and way more open. This is that.

More than 21,000 people have come by since. But back then the machine was something you got shown, alone. In V3.1 the hall around it is a shared world: you pick an avatar and you see everyone else who is there right now.

What you can do with them:

- Talk. A general chat for the whole hall, and private messages with whoever is standing next to you.
- Post. YAP is a live forum in the hall. Every topic is a gold block on the floor, and it grows as the conversation trends. Like a post, or tip its author in sats: the tip goes straight to their Lightning address, I never touch it.
- Fight. SATSTRIKE is a multiplayer dogfight above the machine. One round lasts one real block.
- Paint. The wall from my last post is still there, still paid in sats, still not moderated.
- Learn. The free school (87 lessons, 14 languages, three exams) puts your diplomas on your profile, next to your quests and stats. Satoshi is your tutor.
- Pose. A photo booth shoots everyone standing on the mark at once.

Accounts are optional. You can log in by scanning a QR code with your Lightning wallet (LNURL-auth): no email, no password. Your profile shows only what you choose, including a Lightning address so people can tip you.

Same rule as before: the machine is free and stays free. No token.

What I would love from you: come by at the same time as a friend and try to break the social side. And if you sat a normie in front of it (looking at you, @nichrome), tell me where they stalled.

I have built this: https://visualizebitcoin.org

Visualize Bitcoin is Bitcoin explained as a live 3D machine. Every key concept of the protocol is a moving part in it, running on live network data: you watch the thing work instead of reading about it. Nothing on it is a metaphor. There is a guided tour with a narrator who speaks 14 languages, and at the end you can ask him about the machine in front of you.

Some of you have already seen it. It got picked up here first, by one of you, and Bitcoin Info carried it on X. That was the first real wave of visitors this thing ever had, so thanks for that.

What I pushed since is a wall in the hall, and it is the fun way to actually handle the Lightning Network instead of reading about it. You paint pixels on it, and you pay for them in sats. The smallest thing you can buy costs one sat, which is low enough to be somebody's first Lightning invoice ever. There is a page next to it written for exactly that person.

I am not going to explain the rest of it here. Go poke at it.

The site is not finished either. Right now the machine is something you get shown. It is going to get a lot bigger, and way more open!

The machine itself stays free and always will. I will find ways to fund the work, and none of them will be charging you for it. The point of this is to share what I know about Bitcoin, and building it makes me go deeper down the rabbit hole and end up seeing it as one whole revolutionary thing instead of a pile of separate concepts.

If you send it to someone who does not get Bitcoin yet, tell me where they stall. That is the feedback I can act on.

i see TBH i know nothing about SEO, my friend who is good told me to do google serach (classic) but also bing dev tool cause bing is used a lot by chat GPT and stuff... i guess SEO is a game that evolve super fast and even more now that AI change the rules.

i ask about SEO and how i could share my stuff because it's about BTC he recomanded SN, he also told me about new.ycombinator but i didn't understand much there! Nice to meet you

Howdy! Very new here, I landed on SN because of AI (Claude, haha). It told me to come and I'm glad I did, I really like the concept of SN.

I'm building something around Bitcoin, a tool to help people actually understand how it works. Still finishing it, I'll share it soon.

Otherwise, happy to read you all and jump into discussions. Cheers!

I build small visual things on the web, on my own.

The one I care about right now is Visualize Bitcoin: the protocol drawn as one machine, running on live network data, narrated in 14 languages. [https://visualizebitcoin.org](https://visualizebitcoin.org)

Here to read more than I post, and to get corrected. I would rather look stupid in a comment than ship something wrong to a beginner.

Surf in the morning, build the rest of the day.
