Saifedean Ammous always encourages people to download the PDFs of The Bitcoin Standard that are circulating on the web. He doesn’t care, what matters to him is that people read it and amplify his audience.
By the way, it’s a very good book. It has orange-pilled more people than any other.
Yes. MSTR tried to build something around Bitcoin (remember MicroStrategy Orange, kind of like storing email credentials on UTXOs?), but quickly abandoned the idea before pivoting to full-blown financial engineering to buy more bitcoin.
Originally, I wanted to generate the metric “number of addresses with a balance greater than zero” myself, directly from my own node, because I saw somewhere on Twitter that it peaked exactly at the 2017 price peak. I thought it could help me predict the next cycle tops.
Well, generating that turned out to be way harder than I initially estimated, but the process eventually led me to develop a solid piece of software capable of generating all kinds of on-chain metrics on my own.
So, I learned a bit of web development and launched the website a few years ago, I think it was right after the FTX implosion in 2022.
Since then, I’ve kept improving it in my spare time (I still have a fiat job), adding new metrics and visualizations. I mostly use it for my own bitcoin price analysis, since traffic is low and I don’t have a meaningful number of subscribers.
Spread the word if you like it!
For sure! A lot of people have entered the Bitcoin space in recent years, and many of them aren't as aware of Bitcoin tech as some of us who watched a lot of great technical content, from Andreas Antenopoulos, for example.
Good stuff! I also liked the other article on your blog about an easy way for a website to receive Lightning payments.
For my service Bitcoin Is Data, I used BTCPay Server, and it was a pain to set it up correctly. If your solution had been available at the time, I would have chosen yours!
Beautiful visualizations of challenging Bitcoin metrics, with raw data available in CSV/XLSX/JSON formats. Updated hourly.
Yes, definitely — it is an aggregated estimation. It's not an exact number, but as the number of transactions grows, these movements that aren't real buys and sells matter less and less.
The Bitcoin Is Data website has excellent visualizations on this topic, including charts showing both the quantity of UTXOs and their BTC balances:
