The Honolulu Board of Water Supply has issued a key approval that will advance a $204 million desalination project in Hawaii on the Island of O'ahu on the site of the former Barbers Point U.S. Naval Air Station, according to project officials.
The board awarded the project to Kalaeloa Desalco LLC, which will design, construct, operate and maintain the 1.7 million-gallon-per-day plant, in June 2023, according to Kalaeloa Desalco's parent company, Cayman Islands-based Consolidated Water Co. Ltd.
The project timeline includes a two-year development phase, followed by two years of construction, project officials said. Kalaeloa Desalco has a 20-year operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement, plus two five-year extension options.
Construction on the project's 20-acre site will include:
  • An administration building;
  • Laboratory
  • Office,
  • A processing equipment building;
  • Grading;
  • Drainage;
  • Roads;
  • Parking;
  • Utilities;
  • Fencing;
  • Landscaping; and
  • Security systems.

My Thoughts 💭

2k BTC to secure water from the sea. Sounds like a great investment! Not a flashy project but necessary for resilient infrastructure!
very interesting project
I wonder why more coastal towns and cities don't have plans for desalination because it sounds like a no brainer unless it is very expensive to build and operate desalination plant.

Yeah and energy. Need tons of energy

we need to produce more nuclear energy

All types! Humanity hasn’t come close to harnessing the best forms of energy plus we waste far more than we use

I agree with you for the most part
Nuclear is reliable and clean and cheaper in the long run. The biggest cost is building nuclear power plants.
Japan uses nuclear because it is 99 percent dependent on foreign oil and natural gas.
German made a mistake, a fatal error by shutting down all of its nuclear plants

Here too, the water... There is a Hungarian poem, a few lines of which read: "Although the galley is above. And below is the water, Therefore the water is the LORD" (I don't know how accurate the translation is)... The point is that water will soon become a "great lord"! It is therefore necessary to bring such projects forward. In addition, they did 2 good things: they created drinking water, and they extracted salt from seawater.
