Zai pits are holes dug in the soil measuring approximately 30x30 cm wide and deep, spaced every 90 cm. Each hole is filled with organic manure, which allows rainwater to be retained and essential nutrients to be provided for plant growth. This traditional technique has proven to be extremely effective in semi-arid regions such as Kilifi, Northern Eastern, Ukambani and Baringo.
In addition to combating soil degradation, Zai pits promote increased fertility and significantly improve agricultural productivity. It is a simple, low-cost and highly impactful solution for farmers facing challenging climate conditions.
