pull down to refresh

Mountianhead, named after the Utah estate where the movie is set, satirizes four billionaire tech bros on a weekend getaway. The main character is pretty transparently an Elon/Zuck hybrid that kicks off the story by releasing AI content creation tools (with release notes of "fuuck") that lead to global chaos. Steve Carell plays a mentor-investor attempting to disassociate from reality and mortality through money and technology. Schwartzman plays the runt of the litter, a not-yet-billionaire who made his money through a not-prestigious retail business, struggling to earn his "b-eanut" in tech. The final group member, while being made unlikeable in his own way, provides the voice of reason and made their billions with an AI content filtering tool.
"Mountainhead sounds a lot like Fountainhead. It's hideous. Who was you decorator? Ayn Bland?" - paraphrase of voice-of-reason character
It was funny, stakes escalated predictably but daringly, and all characters, even when behaving absurdly, had familiar and identifiable motives. The satire didn't break very much, which was grating but bearable. In general, the movie pulled off the unfashionable feat of being internally consistent and entertaining.
I give in four out of five meat morsels on the k00bimeater.
I enjoyed it a lot. Steve Carell is one of those people who continues to surprise me by how good an actor he actually is.
