In 2023, the U.S. federal government collected $4.67 trillion in taxes and redistributed $4.56 trillion back to states and residents. But which states contributed the most—and least—on a per-person basis?
This dataset, originally published by USAFacts, shows how much federal revenue each state generated per capita.
Damn. Our quarterly tax bill is higher than those annual numbers.
I wonder why DC doesn't have data?
Many years ago, I worked for a politician and he gave me some good advice: don't complain about taxes. Just be glad you make so much money that your tax bill is so high. When I look at this map, it is clear how little a lot of people really live on. Every year my partner and I refer to our tax paperwork as the world's most expensive craft project. My goal this year is to make it more expensive.
