I highly recommended DarthCoin's guides.
As to monitoring the node, I find myself connecting to my node daily for various things. Either via the web web browser or via an app like Zeus. So it is likely you will notice it being down by the fact that you can not access it.
what would happen if there is a power outage?
Get a UPS (backup Battery) they don't cost much and your node will be grateful for it.
Also, for the ones running mini pc, without screen.
A quick tip, I found some of the mini PCs out there like to have a monitor connecting during boot up. So you may end up keeping a monitor (crash cart) around in case of a reboot.
