For some context, one of those central bank gold bars we see in movies is ~440oz which is worth roughly $1.5m. So assuming you aren't traveling through customs or anything, and presumably drug dealers and the like can smuggle stuff well, it probably does make sense for small to medium sized laundering when you aren't very technically sophisticated.
