Recommendations for buying a new computer for work

I'm looking to buy a new computer for myself, a solopreneur investor that mainly works in Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. I'm also managing multiple tabs and stuff for tracking and contacting leads on Hubspot, and I use Teams / Zoom video call for work. Nothing crazy going on on my computer, but I wanted to see what you all think are the specs I need to have a fast-running computer for this. Less expensive is better, but I know some of the lower-end models will crap out or be slow, even for the programs I use.

Any thoughts on what PC to buy?

The less expensive option is to simply make a backup on an external drive of the important stuff including browser settings. Then install linux in your old machine, it will perform much better.

I'd add to replace microzoz programs with open source ones, libreoffice.org and openoffice.org are great alternatives and allow exporting xls and docs in case your clients need it. Alternatively, cryptpad.org offers great online alternative as collaborative online workspace, everything encrypted, for real.

I only have bad experiences buying refurbished laptops. They’re slow very fast. Didn’t work long for my limited needs.

+1 the system76 recommendation. A few years ago I sold my System76 Bonobo WS because I got a desktop gifted to me, but then a few weeks later I started to miss the laptop. My only complaints with it were the fan noise and the 4K display. It didn't play nice with my multi-monitor setup, where one screen was 1080p and the laptop was 4K. But the laptop itself was very powerful, great for Docker/K8s/emulation and a workhorse that never let me down.

i'm still a apple desktop maxi and and a huge fan of the mac studio especially if you have any desire to run local LLMs the m4 and m3 ultra are fantastic processors even though you will pay a lot for internal storage although you can get big external thunderbolt drives

I've been lusting over https://frame.work/ .. I still don't have one, too broke, but I want it as my next computer.

I hear good things about Lenovo X1 Carbon.

System76 is great too. I had a Bonobo WS that I used for years and it was one of the best computers I've owned.

For your use case, you could probably find something on Newegg in the $600-$800 range that would do everything you need. Granted, I'm a Linux user and I have no idea what kind of computer you need to run Windows.

For multitasking, more RAM is always better. Nowadays I don't run anything less than 32GB. IDK anything about modern processors, but when I'm shopping I always use https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ to compare the processors of computers I'm interested in.

If you're not a mac person, I personally like the direction of framework. They make everything easy to customize and upgrade and tinker with. Everything is a bit bespoke, so you're kind of banking on them continuing to exist, but I'd guess they won't be disappearing soon and IIRC all their specs are public so given enough time we should see after-market sellers emerge.
