When smartphones were first a thing, I remember people thinking that it would be the death of handhelds, but as a gamer and huge 3ds fan, I knew it would never happen. platformers and things just dont adapt well, and virtual pads are shit.
But then mobile devs found a way to make it work - which was basically a gacha system where the game is throttled and you end up paying or losing to p2p players
Recently I've been playing one , Warhammer Tactics and it's not bad, i tried another zombie shooter one and got bored of it.
I find the psychology interesting of having a game make all it's money on whales when, probably, that money would be better spent on a normal gaming experience.
what do you guys think of mobile gaming? have you found any good ones?

I haven't fallen in love with a smartphone game in the same way I have with games on dedicated gaming devices. The only game I've seriously played on a smartphone was a free Glypha port to iOS that is no longer available last I checked.
In part, I think smartphones are noisy - it's hard to lose yourself in a game when notifications keep popping up. Also the interconnectedness of online multiplayer games and payment expansions, etc, dilute my favorite part of games - an expanding, branching, artistic, experience that takes me away from everything.

This reminds me of why I never got into computer games. I think without knowing it, I preferred a dedicated console so as not to mix computer usage purposes and gaming. I liked computers for chatting with friends, web browsing, etc, and gaming on consoles. I know PC gaming is “superior”, but I had fun on consoles anyway.

i was never a pc gamer, per se, but played the usual rts games and shooters, doom and duke nukem etc
i always liked console gaming though, because you could do it in front of the tv and with friends irl.
my friend is now a pc gamer and he; 's just on his own in his basement playing lol, bit antisocial!
still, these days with things like steam deck and hybred consoles, i think it's easy to have the best of everything. that being said, i still dont have a steam deck either

I totally agree. The ergonomics and battery life don't help, and worse still, the most common games have evolved within the same boring freemium formulas.
I see that the only one that was competent in making games viable on mobile devices was Nintendo with the Switch. Before that, Nintendo itself had games on emulators on smartphones, the latter without its help and connivance.

The Android based game handhelds (like Retroid Pocket 5) are essentially a combination of a phone and game console. It has the best from both worlds and I really appreciate those, since it runs literally all games ever done up to Playstation 2... :)
In terms of smartphone gaming, "Retry!" from Rovio is my favorite game on smartphone that you can no longer get. There are ways to get the .apk (I have it), but it's no longer on app stores. If there's anyone that beat Retry!, I would love to be your friend!

The idea is good and even natural since we use devices daily, but it has more complications than benefits. Some games took off and soon became saturated, like Angry Birds, Cut the Hope and Candy Crush for example. All in the same freemium style and with levels. Larger game ports don't take off because of the battery and heat, not to mention the ergonomics that don't help. What I played a lot on my smartphones were emulators, I was able to finish Pokemon and other games that I couldn't play because I didn't have a console.
