I wouldn't bother. I have a handful of friends who practice psychotherapy. It seems like the sorts of therapists who get into jobs that accept insurance are often herd-followers. I imagine you're going to want to speak to somebody who can at least kinda understand where you're coming from. (note: that's my own hangups, I could be totally wrong in that advice)
Unless you're actually strapped for cash, I would say that your best bet is to find somebody in your area who practices the sort of therapy you want to explore. I would suggest also that you find somebody who you have to pay well... as that's an indication their books are full.
If you can find one, expect to pay between $100-150/hour for non-insurance. but that's pretty affordable. And... if you have an HSA, then you're just spending pretax money anyway (I guess you probably don't have an HSA).
I've only ever found one therapist, and he was the perfect match for me. Well, I guess it was two, but I only ever got therapy from the 2nd.
I got on Yelp, looking for "therapy for men". I called the first guy, and said "hey, I know that I've been happy and that I've been sad... but people say they 'feel happy' or 'feel sad' and I don't know what that means to 'feel' feelings, which seems relevant to my needs."
he responded, "well, neat. we're all full up, here... but call this guy, who's a specialist in that sort of thing"
so I called the other guy. he was a trained Hakomi practitioner, and I spent 2 years navigating my thoughts & learning about how to feel my body's feelings. meeting him was an absolute blessing, and I think I orange-pilled him... so hopefully he feels similarly. that relationship was predicated on business, but it was also personally transformative.
I wish you luck. If you want a reference, hmu.
You’re right about therapists that take insurance sadly. None of the ones that take insurance had in-person offices in downtown Austin. It’s all telemedicine - which I hate, because it’s hard to tell if someone is being earnest or not.
I found someone that should be able to help with my immediate query. Long term I’m not sure what kind of help/coaching I want/need yet.
