They thought about things and looked into the distance.  If magazines were available they thumbed through those.  That's what I remember.

Yes the screen thing would be really interesting. What did people do back then, when waiting in line, etc? Just...talk to someone? Stare into space? Read a book?

I honestly can not really remember.

I'd probably go somewhere busy, like a mall, and watch people without phones and screens. I'd also be curious about supermarkets and what I could buy.
