Earlier this week my wife told me she "accidentally" transferred $100 out of our joint account that we only use for house expenses (mortgage, utilities, insurance etc). She said "I will put it back when I get paid on Friday". Once she was said that I was pretty certain it wasn't an "accident" or she would have just put it back right away. Haha

Being the nice guy I am, earlier today I said "I have some money to deposit in my business account so I am going to the bank. Don't worry about the $100 you were going to put back in the joint account, I will transfer it from the business account once I make the deposit."

She was pleased and grateful.

As I am heading out to run some errands (including the bank) I check the bank's app on my phone and notice it wasn't $100 she "accidentally" transferred out earlier this week. It was only $50. I thought great now I only have to deposit $50.

I finished my other errands and went to the bank. Made my deposit into the business account and then transferred $50 to the joint account. However, when I looked at the balance on the printout I thought "this is not right". I had just checked the balance before I went out so I knew what it should be after the $50 deposit. Puzzled I decided to review the recent transactions and I noticed another $50 transfer out of the account from today which was not there when I left to run my errands.

I texted my wife "Did you transfer another $50 out of the joint account?"

She replied "Yes, I wanted to make sure I was correct about the 100 amount so I checked online. I saw it was only 50 not 100 and you said you were going to deposit 100 so I took the other 50. Love you".

I responded "Sigh... Love you."

You can't argue with wife logic guys. You just have to laugh!

We have taken care of handling money in a different way. When we were living in Japan, she handled all the money and tax matters. When we repatriated, I started handling all the money matters. I also gave her a debit and credit card to the accounts. We haven’t had any problems, at all. The only time we have problems is when the banks screw things up.

No, every account is in one's personal name. I can request a second card and let my wife use it, but it still in my name. And vice-versa.

Funny thing, majority of couples in Korea operate this way:

Korea is still a very patriarchal society; husbands make the money and then send all their income to their wives. The wives manage the household money and send a small allowance of a couple of hundred dollars to their husbands for personal spending.

Gotta make sure he does not have too much money to spend at the room salons~~ (this one is tongue-in-cheek, the allowance part is real)

This makes Korea sound matriarchal. The wife controls everything. Gives an allowance to the husband. Definitely conservative. Korea is interesting how it is so modern and capitalist in one way, but very conservative still in other ways. I lived in Korea for a couple of years. Interesting times for sure. Hopefully can visit again someday!

I still think it is good for couples to have their own accounts as well besides a joint account but it makes sense for a joint account for the house expenses and such. I still have my own accounts and my wife does as well. I don't know if that is normal. I think most couples these days just pool all their money.

Indeed! I often find myself in such scenarios where I just laugh and never argue the logic.

Today my wife asked me to buy her a back cover/case for her phone of her choice from an online marketplace. She showed me and said "order this". I hesitated because it was heftily priced. I asked her whether she checked the price for it. She replied, "No, why? How much is it?" I showed her and she said, "If you don't buy it now, go get some Bhelpuri for me right now." I obliged. The back case would cost me around $20 and Bhelpuri cost me around $0.5 for 4 people. I'm damn sure she already knew the phone case was heftily priced and she wanted me to send for bringing bhelpuri from the market.

Actually she knows that I don't prefer to go to market sand in crowd and wait. Today there was just noone elese so she took this trick out of the box. BTW she is more frugal than I'm and she already have 3-4 back cases for her phone so I was just surprised she demanded another one.. I must say I'm lucky that so far in three years, I've hardly found her sad or disturbed or irritated with me.

I'm happy you had a relaxed response to this. I feel I would have a hard time sharing an account with anyone. Seems confusing and could be stressful.

I just have overdraft on mine and try to get as near 0 as possible, and sometimes $2k+ in the negative. No need to worry about fiat balances anymore.

Man, that gave me a good laugh. Classic wife move — somehow it all technically makes sense, but you still end up shaking your head wondering how you just got finessed so smoothly 😅 Honestly, the “Love you” at the end was the perfect mic drop. At that point, what can you even say? Just smile, transfer the funds, and keep the peace 😂 Married life is wild sometimes.
