TL:DR
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to speed up the development of AI data centers on Federal land.
The order revokes the Biden EO from January, which Trump said would have "saddled AI data center development on Federal lands with pages of DEI and climate requirements.”
The old order said that data center operators building on Federal lands should procure new clean energy generation to "prevent electricity price increases," and that companies were obliged to pay workers "prevailing wages" and adhere to "high labor standards."
The new order instead directs the Secretary of Commerce to launch an initiative to provide financial support, such as loans, grants, and tax incentives.
It instructs agencies to streamline environmental reviews and permitting for data centers and related infrastructure, and qualifies projects for faster permitting under the FAST-41 framework.
The EO defines data centers as dedicated facilities consuming more than 100MW.
Related infrastructure includes semiconductor fabs and energy systems - although the Trump administration has taken steps to block or slow down the development of renewable energy projects on Federal lands.
"By streamlining permitting and providing financial support, the US will accelerate the development of data centers and enable our global dominance in AI, which will in turn create jobs and enhance national security," the Trump order states.
It comes after the White House published a broader AI Action Plan this week, which also called for reducing permitting regulations for data centers.

My Thoughts 💭

Where is the EO to grow organic food and grass fed beef so all Americans can have access to clean healthy food at a low price. Instead we get more spending AI as if Meta, Google, and Microsoft haven’t spent billions on it already.
