I’m looking for a new watch since mine broke. I want something simple and durable, and within that range, the Casio G-Shock DW5600 seemed like the most obvious choice. Then I came across an endless number of copies — some poorly made, others well made — and the dilemma: pay more for the original or less for a fake?
With the original, I have some assurance that the product was made following and respecting construction standards from a company with years of reputation in quality and durability. With the knockoffs, I know I’ll be paying for what I’m getting: a poorly made, low-quality product that does meet my basic need — telling the time.
I haven’t made up my mind yet. I tend to lean toward the original for its durability and for a somewhat off-track thought I had while rambling about all this.
The original is the longest proof-of-work chain in what it proposes to be, and it should be respected for that. However, the longest work chain isn’t built from the work of a single worker, but rather of many — which favors poorly made copies. Still, knockoffs are nothing more than cheaper versions that need to resemble the original in appearance. So, using quality materials and precision in construction is a waste of resources for something that’s supposed to be cheap. I thus conclude that fake copies are nothing but crap.
I’d appreciate any suggestions for watches like that — they don’t need to be expensive. I just need them to tell time, be tough, and be durable. By the way, if there’s any DIY option out there, I’d love to know about it.

I looked up how much the original costs. It’s ~€100.
How much are the fake ones?
If it’s a lot cheaper, I would try one of them. If it breaks, you can still buy the original.

Much less than that, around $20 in my area.
I think this is the best approach, since the goal is simple.

If I may ask: why do you need a watch that costs €100 if you want "something simple and durable"?
Is the F-91W not enough? it costs €15, it's reliable enough for bombs and I also have it and never had any problems with it. Can't even remember when I bought it, might have been 10+ years.
didn't include this question in my initial reply since I know it can be annoying when someone asks for advice on buying something and then people reply with "why do you need that???

Yes, you can ask, after all, I made a paid post on a public platform and I appreciate your attention.
The F91W seems more fragile than the G-Shock, from what I've seen. Some things are better on the G-Shock, like the backlight and durability. But overall, it's all about the aesthetic.
That's why your question is good; it's clearing things up. A fake that looks like a G-Shock is viable.
