Have you ever read a post online and thought, “This is so good, I wish I could tip the writer instantly? That’s exactly what zaps do and they run on the Lightning Network, Bitcoin’s fast and cheap layer for micro-payments.
Zaps aren’t just tips, they’re real sats. (fractions of Bitcoin) sent directly to someone’s Lightning wallet, sometimes in seconds. No bank. No third-party. Just peer-to-peer appreciation powered by open source tech.
What’s wild is how "small zaps can go viral. One good post or comment can earn thousands of sats, especially if it hits the right audience. And with wallets like "Wallet of Satoshi or Alby, getting paid has never been easier.
Zaps are more than just rewards, they’re quiet revolution in how we value digital content.
Have you ever received or sent a zap? How do you see it changing social platforms in the next few years?

I've probably only lost money so far. Yet, I was maybe one of the first people to send a zap and receive a zap.1 I'm playing the long game though.

Footnotes

  1. if we define a zap as a lightning payment made to a piece of public social media content that natively allows for such things that is. I think Sphinx Chat had this functionality in its chat groups before we did.
