Most people think Lightning only works with a constant internet connection. But with a bit of creativity (and the right tools), offline LN payments are surprisingly doable.
You can receive LN payments while offline using async payments (AMPs or BOLT12), and with the right setup, you don’t even need your node online 24/7. Combine this with tools like Core Lightning, Phoenixd, and even ecash mints as fallback, and you’re looking at real resilience.
For example, in low-connectivity places (like Cuba), you can run LNbits locally, use a phone wallet like Phoenix, sync over mesh/Wi-Fi, and settle when connectivity returns. Bonus: add a Chaumian mint like Cashu for full offline local spending between users.
Lightning isn’t just for always-on nodes in the West. It can be adapted to work where internet is spotty or expensive. You just have to think outside the box.
Anyone else building Lightning setups for offline use?
