Ostensibly, this is an announcement post for Dan Wang's forthcoming book, BREAKNECK, however, he writes interestingly about his own writing process, food, AI, and, most interestingly, the differences between China and the US as seen by a person born in China, raised in Canada, living in the US, and traveling in China.
Maybe I'm particularly hungry for this kind of information because I want to take my kids to China or perhaps I was especially intrigued by Wang's heritage in Yunnan (which I agree is simply the coolest province in China). Anyhow, this is announcement post of his is a great little read if you want a reasonable window into China, the US, and writing a book.
Interesting comparison of China as an "engineering state" and America as a "lawyerly state" and some of the pros and cons of both
Speaking from just the American perspective it's super clear how laws have been used to block anything and everything and has really slowed down our ability to build physical infrastructure. For some reason this hasn't touched software yet. I wonder how much environmentalism can be blamed
