I am planning on putting something together to discuss DC and its crime issue because it isn't as straightforward and easy as one would expect. After all the crime rate is at historic lows but that does not in the slightest tell the whole story. To put it mildly most people I know wont walk or ride the metro at night anymore because the risk is just not worth it.

How do you square the supposed crime statistics with what people are feeling on the ground?

So last night not long after I posted this roughly 3/4 blocks from me this event occurred.
Over the 4th of July (mind you fireworks are illegal in DC) we had another instance of 20+ kids going down my street opening the doors into apartment lobbies and firing fireworks into the lobbys. People apartment windows were shot with them artillery shells were going off on the narrow streets it was crazy.
After that event the instituted a curfew…. For a whole 3 days for kids under 18. DC has crazy lax rules for kids under 18 and I want to say that 14 and under can't even be charged with a crime!
The area I live is full of Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle and Chambers. We have had since the beginning of the year Capitol Hill police outside numerous buildings in the few blocks around me because staffers were getting attacked and hell even a Member of Congress was freaking carjacked!

So it seems like maybe crime is up, it's just crime statistics that are down?
I've seen these youth gatherings in LA too. IMO the justice needs to be swift and harsh. Lax rules for youth make sense when it's an isolated incident, not when it's a mob gathering and it's repeated.

Crime stats are likely also down because of the things businesses have done like locking everything up behind glass and like I mentioned the amount of police out. If the Capitol PD stayed only on the hill and DC wasn't relying on all these other agencies I don't think the numbers would be good at all.
DC’s City Council also tried to lower mandatory minimums for a variety of crimes including sexual violence if people were young. That blew up in there face as well.
Also one of the councilmen has been arrested and is on trial for bribery but somehow keeps his job….
