Users from lower-income countries tend to be a lot less valuable to advertisers. But which platform you’re on matters a lot, too. Just this week, Reddit said its revenue was booming thanks to AI-powered ads. Pinterest shares, meanwhile, are sinking this morning on the exact opposite — AI’s influence underwhelmed investors. At Snap, it was the same story, with shares diving 17% on Wednesday as the company is somehow barely growing while its peers leap forward. For all three of those companies, the average revenue per active user (ARPU) was about $2.40 to $2.80 a month for a user in the US or North America. (They define their geographies slightly differently.) So, not a whole lot to split them.

For some time now I've been trying to get off social media. I only use Facebook when I'm going to sell something, and I rarely use Instagram anymore.....!!

Ehhh....the FEED is really appealing, and if you let it guide you, it can consume a lot of your time, that's why I only go in when necessary...!!

Seems likely that ai content is going to dilute the value per user at most platforms.
I wonder what the story is with Meta.

I don't know about that. Aren't advertisers paying for eyes or clicks?
If that's case and AI content manages to produce more of those, I don't see how it would necessarily dilute it.
My completely unfounded theory is the people I know who still use fb have a massive overlap with those who don't know how to or just don't care to use adblockers.

I'd think advertisers are paying for eye and clicks that convert. If they see their conversion rate dropping, maybe they won't be so willing to pay.
Why would the conversion rate drop? Well, just from my own experience, ai content is more skimmable. I don't pay as close attention and ultimately it makes me go somewhere else.

In case of reddit etc. it's actually not that much per user.
Would you prefer to pay one dollar per month for e.g. private mail without any advertisement or a VPN service for a day for less than a dollar?
We now have a payment system that makes it possible to collect payment for small amounts.
If google would fire all their engineers whose tasks it is to make people click on buttons they do not actually want to click, then a lot of these services that are finance by advertisement today would become even cheaper.
A lot of rethinking on user and on business side is necessary here.

Great! I'm trying my best to stay away from Facebook too. I managed to avoid it for a few months, but due to some circumstances, I'm back using it again.

I believe people in our countries use facebook more than the people in the west. However there's nothing like value content on FB.

Everyone knows it's the product, and no one cares. They prefer to get stuck in endless scrolling through the feed instead of directly zap good content like in nostr. Algocracy is one of the most anticipated and dangerous things that no one even cares about. AI is just another tool to drive it forward.
