Google has released Gemma 3 270M, a compact, open-source AI model comprising 270 million parameters, which can run entirely offline on smartphones, Raspberry Pis and other smart devices.

It is lightweight and can be fine-tuned for specific tasks, outperforming similar-sized models in instruction-following benchmarks. On a Pixel 9 Pro, 25 conversations only use 0.75% of the battery.

Current use cases include on-device children’s story generators. Google positions it as ideal for privacy-sensitive, low-power, cloud-free applications.
