Don't open only channels to top 20 / top 100 nodes whatever, most of them will just be drains.

Open (and receive) a bunch of channels from plebs, these are friendish amateur nodes with low fees. For that the best is to create/join lightningnetwork.plus triangles. In a triangle, for each channel you open someone else opens one to you, so you double your capacity (compared to just opening to top channels). As you grow in capacity, you are eligible to join triangles with larger nodes. This is probably the main thing you should be doing till you reach 1 BTC capacity.
