Recently talking with a gen z'er and they made the point that none of the main BTC "influencers" are generating material that is digestible for gen z. I'm curious what the age distribution is of people on SN as a starting point to dig into this.

Boomer4.8%
Gen X25.4%
Millenial55.6%
Gen Z7.9%

I'm a millennial by definition, but not what boomers think a millennial is.
I grew up with MSDOS and VHS tapes FFS!!

reply

"geriatric millennial"

reply

Wait, that is pretty normal.

reply

Iliza Shlesinger did a pretty good job of describing us as Elder Millennials.

reply

Haha same boat over here...

reply

i thought we are talking about halvings

reply

I have come to similar conclusions in polls on Telegram. Millenial and Gen X lead the way. I wonder if the FUD has got to younger people more? The first time I heard about Bitcoin it did not have the same degree of FUD as it does today.

reply

Interesting. Yeah it does also seem like Bitcoin could be guilty by association with NFT/crypto scams, of which gen Z are very aware.

reply

Millenial will win here

reply

Hope the poll gets some visibility :) Relatedly, this is the only gen Z bitcoiner I know of who is active on social media https://twitter.com/jackfsweeney/status/1558833525008334848

reply

If the trend continues, looks like you called it :)

reply

Another millennial here

reply

I think it's mostly millennial because we got screwed over the most by the 2008 crisis.

reply

gen z should care too. They are definitely being screwed over by the current crisis.

reply

I'm an Xennial-- 1979, the lucky ones. We know how to live without technology and absorb the rapid changes to it's introduction and evolution (having lived without maps, GPS, internet and grown up with everything from Atari to Nintendo 64), and we can do it with the anger of a Boomer and the blaze aloofness of a Gen X.

reply

millenial

reply

This is very US centric.

reply

So you mean the stacker news audience responding to this poll is very US centric?

reply

No, I mean the splits by like "boomer" are not really applicable in other countries, since those industrialized in quite different timelines. E.g. most didn't have "baby boom" to get "boomers" :)

Other countries have notably different demographies, but at this point most are in a situation of losing millions of workers from the market every year to feed additional millions of retirees.

reply

Oh right, yeah I'm more interested in the age groups than the qualitative associations with the names.

reply

Kind of a tangent, but we've been calling the current gen of bitcoiners the "Satoshi Generation" because they stack sats rather than whole bitcoins.

reply

Haha right.... And satssers definitely doesn't work.

reply

Or just stackers?

reply

if Gen Z = born after 1997…

Then NFT and Crypto will lead them to bitcoin over time 🤙🏽

reply

Yeah, or Bitcoin could just be guilty by association.

reply

Millenials have the main responsibility to steward Bitcoin through this decade+.

reply

we have to teach the GENZ the errors of their ways with their monkey pictures and unregulated securities.

reply

the gen z'er you spoke to makes a good point...what is digestible for gen z? my jerk reaction is that it has to be short and flashy. but also some documentaries I've seen on YouTube seem like they would fit.

reply

One of the things they mentioned was that most of the content already assumes medium to advanced financial literacy, and many of the graphs are downright confusing without that background.

He did mention this type of content was in the right vein: https://twitter.com/jackfsweeney/status/1558833525008334848

Short and flashy but also explaining things from first principles.

reply

that's good, nice

reply

Sat generation here, home mine edition

reply

I am GEN BTC ;)

reply

I was ready to be Gen Y. But then they renamed us millennials a couple years in. But for a short period of time, I was Gen Y, and it was glorious. But then Gen Z came out and I don't really want to be the same naming schematic as them. It's funny when they call Gen Z Zoomers to compare them to Baby Boomers.

reply

Just the Ideal post, wish we could automatically stack up SATs as each poll is ticked....
