I know it's always been on the radar, nostr now seems to have evolved and grown exponentially since Jack got into it, and Elon accidentally promoted it.
Would it be possible, and most importantly, would it make sense to have a SN<->nostr integration, and how would this look like?
Couple random ideas to consider:
Use SN accounts as Nostr accounts
  • SN could provide one click experience for creating Nostr account (it would automatically populate NIP-05 and also lightning address) - private key could be shown only client side, but maybe also store password encrypted backup back to SN?
  • each SN user could get public and private key (that will be needed for decentralization anyway - initially as part of migration SN could store the private keys - and maybe allow users to migrate to their own private key?)
Use Nostr accounts as SN accounts
  • if nostr user has LN address associated with their profile, they could have streamlined account creation in SN?
Smooth out experience between SN and Nostr clients
  • SN should have much better profile page, that could include both SN posts and things and also automatically show all Nostr related things. Like if I want to see some known person I would go to SN and would see summary of all their SN posts, their Nostr posts, etc.
  • SN could provide a button to "share on nostr" when your SN account has nostr account associated?
  • Nostr clients could show better previews of SN posts and maybe allow direct tipping to the users
Use nostr for posts/comments
  • this one is the trickies and most questionable, but after the steps mentioned above are done, SN could actually use nostr for handling of comment threads per posts and ultimately also handling of posts (there would need to be a way to separate the "I'm posting random comment about my life" and "here's great news / article link")

I think nostr is great, but it's still such a young technology. It has still a lot of issues and a lot of potential for improvement. Lately it has seen a lot of hype, but hype alone won't float the boat. It needs more development, the UX needs to become smoother. I think integration should happen (if at all) in parallel to the core application, to ensure the UX doesn't take a hit.

A thought that crossed my mind, fwiw: SN could potentially use nostr as their backend. This would instantly enable DMs and subs, and bring its existing wot/reputation and payments features as L2 on top.
reply
Sorry, this was poorly phrased. What I meant to say:
  1. nostr backend (automatically unlocking subs and DMs)
  2. SN, with its added reputation, wot and payment features as L2
Also, why not 3) a SN relay, with nip05 support, and SN client app? ๐Ÿ˜Š
reply
I believe the backend of SN should be nostr, that SN should have a nostr relay.
Keep the same stacker news frontend. Switch to nostr as the backend.
Open protocols rule.

implement it, it's all open source ;)

At the very least, make a detailed proposal about how it should work.

I meant @satoshe , they seem to believe that the backend should be nostr. They must have good reasons for that, so why not create an MVP? Nostr is FOSS, as well as stacker.news, so nothing stopping them.
Me, I'm happy with the current stacker.news backend. I think with nostr in it's current state it would become unusable.

My bad, I was proposing he propose a design.

sorry for the misunderstanding ๐Ÿ™

I believe @sn has been following the progress and will pitch it to its users soon

I'm listening to this.
Keyan Kousha [11:38]: I eventually want to pursue Nostr as possibly the protocol that Stacker News is decentralized on, and so in that case it will be natively integrated with it. But maybe thereโ€™s an in-between step for us?
reply
eh until using nostr is as simple as installing an app there isn't any chance of it seeing real widespread adoption. I've hardly seen any non apple users even mention it.
reply
You can use nostr by just installing an app, but you can also use it easier without even having to install an up, since there are plenty of web clients to chose from. Do they need to be polished still? Sure, they do, but so did the #BirdSite at the beginning, and judging by the speed they are improving, some might be much more usable than that soon.

Nostr sucks

Nostr is probably going to be, together with Bitcoin, one of the most relevant technologies developed in the (first half of the?) 21st century.

Also a nice way of reducing operation cost and decentralizing would be to use something like holepunch. But it is also in its infancy

why must they compete with hacker news? makes no sense to me
reply
Hacker News is pretty toxic and anti-bitcoin. Can't fix culture with a different UI.

I am pretty sure Stacker will be successful if it focuses primarily on Bitcoin and adjacent topics. There is enough long tail here for it to work.
Going broad risks dilution and the Eternal Spring effect.

SN and Nostr pretty different experiences, don't think Nostr is really a competitor to reddit/HN-like SN.
