Google says this will help to cut down on bad actors who hide their identity to distribute malware, commit financial fraud, or steal users’ personal data.
I don't doubt that's true, just like the age requirements in the UK and other places will stop some kids from bad things. But in both cases, it's a baby with the bathwater situation, and getting rid of privacy and security measures for people who need them just sucks. There will always be small niche phones available that will allow full privacy, but Google's half of a two-headed monster in the field, and they've taken so many steps backwards recently.
