Fair point. The Zvi article does talk a little bit about animals and consciousness. I wonder if we came up with Ai in science fiction and so all of society got used to the idea without really thinking about difficulty of knowing whether it's real or not. Maybe I just missed that part of the sci-fi corpus, but every book I've ever read about it simply glides over that uncertainty area.
