Unpacking the "Why?"

This video by @kr, was one of the first where Stacker News was introduced and explained.
Why would users (Stackers) contribute back? Stacker News, originally by Keyan Kousha (@k00b), but forever and always by the SN community, is built on a fundamental answer to that question: because they get incentivized—for valuable content.
  1. The Motivation Gap in Traditional Platforms
On platforms such as Hacker News or Reddit, people produce valuable content for valueless rewards such as reputation or social recognition. Although powerful, they can be temporary, and platforms struggle to sustain valuable contributions in the absence of paid advertisements or algorithmic enhancement.
Stacker News upends that formula.
  1. Bitcoin + Lightning Network: Real Value for Real Contributions
SN incentivizes sats via the Lightning Network for high-quality contributions—posting, commenting, or curating. This approach offers:
Rewarding incentives in real-time — Contributions are appreciated. Decentralization of money — Users benefit regardless oftheir difference. Low-fee, high-speed microtransactions — Through the Lightning Network's capability.
This new incentive aligns contributors' interests directly with curation goals on the platform.
  1. Community and Content: A Mutual Reinforcement Loop
Because monetary rewards are based on the quality of content, community members have an incentive to share—and zap—high-quality content. This creates a real feedback:
Valuable content gets rewarded.
Rewards bring more real contributors and curators.
Participation and quality both rise, allowing the platform to expand.
In the process, Stacker News aims to build what Kousha would call "natural communities"—online spaces where engagement and value are reinforcing in an organic fashion.
  1. A Preview of the Larger Philosophy
While the video is simple, Kousha's bigger argument shines through: attention economies are broken. Old likes and karma systems may engage people at the surface level but don't provide for substance.
Stacker News takes a radical experiment—giving sats (real rewards) to community members, not just clout.

In Summary: "Why? Because value should be rewarded." We put Bitcoin where others put valueless rewards.
