The thing that annoys me about follow lists is that they are not contextual (hence my comment above). I should be able to follow people for specific interests or tags, e.g. salsa dance, without seeing everything they post. In fact it should probably be impossible to follow everything from another user.
By making follow functions that show me everything from a user it removes the qualitative reason for the follow, so an algorithm cannot use this as a proxy for an endorsement, the way a backlink is used by Google. This means it's harder to surface high quality content from genuine and legitimate authorities in any given niche.
