Man, I miss Adams so much. I remember reading this essay back when The Salmon of Doubt came out, but it's been ages. Thanks for finding it.
If I were not an atheist I think I would have to be a Catholic because if it wasn't the forces of natural selection that designed fish, it must have been an Italian.
Such a fantastic line (like so many of his).

His wit is unmatched. This article, like his one on the last movement of Brandenburg 5, just showcases how underrated he is at conjuring a sense of wonder!

Seems like I remember him dying shortly before 9-11 after, of all things, exercising. (and shilling heavily for Macintosh, which actually was a pretty good system for a writer then)

Brilliant. His book ‘Last Chance to See’ is often overlooked. But a brilliant travelogue in his signature style, similar to this piece.
