Doing some other stuff led me to this video randomly, which is both about the Rome escalator accident from 2018, and about escalators as a whole. Really fascinating to learn the various safety mechanisms that are in place (there are at least three major failsafes), and how deliberate neglect was the real culprit. Also interesting to learn why the handrails often move at a different speed from the rest of the escalator, and that down escalators actually can generate electricity.
