The shooting

On a Tuesday morning in late August, 10 police officers show up outside Dezi Freeman's home. Freeman is living with his family in a bus1 at a place called Four Gully Farm. The police say they have a warrant and bust their way in. Freeman opens fire, killing two of them and then runs into the woods. Since then, 450 "specialist police" have been looking for Freeman in the nation's "largest ever tactical policing operation" and they've offered a $1m reward for information leading to his capture.
They still haven't found Freeman.

The history

Freeman is a long time member of the Sovereign Citizen Movement. And has had a number of runins with the state. They suspended his gun license in 2024. Prior to that,
His drivers licence was cancelled and he was disqualified from driving for two years after being convicted of speeding, refusing to submit to a drug test and using a mobile phone while driving.
Freeman claimed he and his family were victims of "malicious prosecution" and a "personal vendetta."
In 2021, Freeman sued the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews for "concealing treason an overt act of treason" regarding the Premier's somewhat authoritarian handling of their Covid response.

The warrant

The police who arrived at his home in late August were there to serve a warrant for "historical sex offences" that allegedly occurred between 2023 and 2025.

The video

There is a 27 minute video of the event, filmed by a family member. Supposedly it was circulating on the internet, but I haven't found a copy yet. I did, however, find this description by the Austrialian paper, The Age, that purports to describe what happens in the video.
Freeman, his wife, Amalia, and their two-year-old child were inside the bus when police were serving a warrant over alleged historical sexual abuse on the morning of August 26.
The warrant, which police were executing was in relation to allegations Freeman had sexually assaulted a minor.
Throughout the video — — which police confirmed was “filmed by a member of Dezi Freeman’s family” — Freeman accuses police of being “Nazi thugs” and refuses to open the bus door as officers plead for calm.
“We have got a search warrant right here,” an officer reportedly says in the video.
“Come out and talk to us Dez, we are not going away.”
From inside the bus, Mali is heard asking police not to force entry.
“Can you please not barge in? I have a kid, please,” she says. During the exchange Freeman repeatedly demands to see the search warrant and for a disability liaison officer to be present, claiming he has autism and post-traumatic stress disorder.
When an officer holds the warrant against the bus window, Freeman tells police he believes it is “not valid”.
“We are just trying to do our job, Dez,” one officer says as another begins to work on the bus door with a crowbar.
“Come out and talk to us and we won’t have to break in,” he says.
When officers inform Freeman the warrant is in relation to the sexual assault of a girl he erupts and states the allegations are “bulls--t.”
“You have been targeting me for seven years,” Freeman says before demanding he speak with a commanding officer or senior sergeant.
“Tell your goons to stop breaking the door. This is domestic terrorism. Why did you join the police? So you can terrorise families?” Freeman barks as officers continued to pry the door open.
Shortly after Mali tells officers she is coming out of the bus yet she remains inside, while Freeman deny any sexual assault allegations.
Police tell Freeman they do not wish to discuss the matter before his wife and child.
“Did you join the police force to be Nazi f---ing thugs?” Freeman snaps.
“You are just going to kill me.”
“We are not going to kill you,” an officer replies.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, is seen in the video in front of the other officers dressed in a flannel shirt and jeans.
Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, 34, remains further away until minutes before the shooting when he moves to the left of the bus door.
Police continually work to defuse the situation, telling Freeman he is traumatising his child and advising him to “take a breath” and read the warrant.
Freeman continues to insist the warrant is fake, claiming he is living in “Communist Australia.”
Senior Constable Thompson manages to open a bus window.
Ms Freeman tells police “we are coming out” but is told by officers to “move back and stop hindering us.”
Senior Constable Thompson grabs the roof of the bus and hoists himself inside through the window.
Seconds later, two shots ring out and other officers retreat.
The video ends shortly after, the Daily Mail reports. source
This video was apparently leaked and the official police response is:
Detective Superintendent Jason Kelly said the emergence of the video was “distressing and disappointing”. “That footage is not Victoria Police footage; it is not body-worn camera footage,” he said. “I can only imagine the impact that will have on the family of Neal and Vadim and the colleagues who were present and the broader [members of] Victoria Police and law enforcement across Australia.”
The only commentary I will provide is that I wish police departments weren't so frosty about footage of what they do being leaked. It doesn't incline me to believe their side of the story.

Footnotes

  1. Australian sources, so who knows how they are using English. 'Bus' here could mean anything from a RV kind of trailer thing to mobile home.

Now I want to see the footage.

I wonder how much evidence they had for the warrant. Were there specific allegations? Or is it some kind of "he honeschools and he'd weird" thing.

This is not normal police behaviour it is so suspicious. 10 officers to arrest someone for sexual assault allegations?
Also appearing in casual clothes? Not uniformed??
