All this drama, all this noise. I feel like watching the Birds IRL. That's what inspired me to redesign a movie poster for the 31-Word Horror Movie Review Contest, here is my entry #1246867. Here I simply wanted to create some space outside the contest to discuss and make my point of this ongoing psyop.
Turn out, bitcoin (the block chain) has been designed by Satoshi to host "extra data", OP_RETURNs are already feasible today without any OP_RETURN changes! Here's the whitepaper in a 980kb OP_RETURN. So why change the status quo to make easier something that is already possible? Out of band transactions will always be possible and are an important part of our censorship resistant properties - not a problem or "centralization" for core maintainers to solve.1
What needs to be filtered out is all this dissonance and drama. Despite it, may be necessary to introduce and adopt alternative implementations, I'd agree we'd need even more than two. Libbitcoin has been silently in the making since 2014 and, motivated by different reasons, other implementations are already available, DYOR.
There's no right or wrong, simply evaluate your needs and run the implementation that best suit your use of bitcoin, morality and ethical values. Optionality is good, it feed the decentralization aspect of bitcoin that need to be reflected outside the chain itself.
Don't let the birds attack your mind, the more attention you give to it, the more it will eat your brain.
Time to time, I am still enjoining sitting in the sofa and watch this entertaining show 🍿
₿e creative, have fun! :D

Footnotes

Great job with the poster redesign!
What if all the op_return controversy was a psyop by the libbitcoin team to crack open the market before their v4 release? Probably not the most likely scenario, sadly.
Your advice here is good.
