I tried out the role-assigning strategy. I took things slowly and explained the respective roles to students, so the lesson proceeded reasonably smoothly. They enjoyed witnessing the light bulbs light up. Some groups noticed how the light bulbs emitted warmth when they connected more batteries, so that was a timely opportunity to remind them of the concept of heat energy.
It was a good maiden effort. Since it was my first time assigning roles, I did not want to complicate the process by returning them their workbooks. However, as they grow accustomed to their roles and teammates, I could have stretched them further by getting them to record their observations so that they would feel like scientists!
