i have been paying my kids pocket money out in sats for like a year and when it gets high enough, i move it to cold storage.

But I think it's going to be time soon to teach her about managing cold storage, learning about on chain, swapping with boltz etc

What's the easiest hardware wallet she can start with? a bitkey, maybe?

plus i always have the fear that if i randomly drop dead, someone will need to at least know how to move btc around on chain and be comfortable with it

There's no need to waste your money on hardware wallets, aka toys. 12 words well placed are enough.

Better learn how to build your own hiding places:

a USB drive with TailsOS
steganography in images with your family vacation
12 words placed in a text / letter / online blog that nobody will know it contain a wallet.

Also spread your stash in multiple locations, compartmentalize I've explained all these scenarios in many guides:

Just imagine: one of these guides contain 12 words that open a wallet with BTC. So fucking simple.

A HW device is an invitation for "hit me hard this device contain my BTC" and anybody will know that you have a lot of BTC hidden in there. But a meaningless picture everybody will ignore it. Even a stupid USB stick that is encrypted with TailsOS.

just buy more sats for your kid instead of a useless plastic toy

I agree with Darth 100%!!!!! No need to buy a hardware signer. If they are already familiar with how to use a bitcoin wallet and just looking to take the next step in security, get them learning how to secure their seed/key backups.

If you want to include a device (playing around with backups isn't terribly fun), get 'em going on a node. Any old laptop will do. You can run Bitcoin Core (or Knots) on whatever operating system you like (Windows, Mac, Linux). You don't have to be technical. It's pretty much just download and install.

There are lots of great tutorials about how to connect your wallet to your node. Most wallets make this pretty easy. It'd be a fun experience and they would probably learn a lot.

Kids should learn to can hack the planet from an old Linux laptop immediately after the alphabet, absolute must project. Get their feet wet.

i mean, i would need to master that myself before teaching a kid, but when what wallet would the keys unlock, a paper wallet, hot wallet etc? i thought half the point of a hardware wallet was it was more secure than a hot wallet

Teach them how to build their own. Also teach them how to use Linux. Teach them how to be truly in control instead of being passive consumers reliant all their lives upon third party HWs.
