Probably came from traditional English where the they use fag to describe cigarette. So the fags end would be the last bit of the cigarette. In North America we say the butt end for that referring to cigarette butts.
There have been many Butts in Pakistan Cricket team, so please pardon me I got a bit carried away. BUTt TBH, I knew not the variations on the word and I just wanted to tell you guys how that feels, when you keep on doing the same thing for a serious amount of time - Fags become butts and butts become cigarette ends, all of them are cool though.
