When there's a chain split and you had 1 bitcoin before, you now effectively have 1 bitcoin on both chains. You can try to sell the coin on the chain you don't like (the one you don't consider "bitcoin") to some sucker for %x of a coin on the chain you do like (the one you consider "bitcoin") to end up with more coins than before.
