The markdown transformer doesn’t know how to handle line breaks. So a line break would create a full paragraph node instead of… a line break
But I’ll teach it.

The goal is to avoid precisely that! I want to achieve 1:1 formatting before migrating anything

line breaks don't break quote mode, but paragraph breaks do.
