- Use a Clear Brainstorming Structure
- Think of the topic encompassed by both the reading passage & the picture & scrutinise the picture.
- Think of an onion & generate possible questions based on its different layers, such as personal, family, school, & society/Singapore.
- Prepares the candidate’s mind to activate relevant schemata, enabling him to share his experiences & thoughts effectively. Enhances sharing readiness.
Answering Question 1
- Use a Clear Mental Structure
- Systematic way to interpret the picture empowers students to frame their thoughts logically.
- Naturally use feeling words & score well for vocabulary.
- Sentence starters enable them to transition from general picture description to weaving in engaging personal experiences.
Answering Question 2
- Consistent use of an answering structure (i.e., T.R.E.E.S) & sentence starters encourages students to express their opinions confidently & display critical thinking.
Answering Question 3
- Students taught to use these five connection types (aka schemata) to broaden & deepen their answers.
- When we activate students’ existing schema, they can retrieve insights from their long-term memory to share about themselves as unique individuals
- Judicious use of sentence starters helps trigger such mental associations.
