It's certainly not ideal, but if this actually clears up a bunch of chronic ailments, then it might be an improvement.

I should make a prediction market about some awful side effect being discovered in the next decade...but I don't trust our society to ever admit it.

Haven't they already found blindness to be a side effect?

I'm sure there would be a bunch, but chronic obesity seems to be a major factor in all of the major health problems people have. Personally, I suspect there's more to that connection too, but I don't think carrying tons of extra fat is healthy either.
