I've been mulling and putting together scraps of blog posts / articles for what I think might be useful for some readers.
While I have had no shortage of excuses to procrastinate on actually publishing anything yet, the one thing that keeps popping back up like a cockroach taped to a cuckoo clock's spring mechanism is where to actually publish it. While I have narrowed it down to a few of the myriad of options, I'm still undecided. I'm not telling which ones to avoid influencing suggestions.
So, I think it is time to tap into what stackers here would suggest to just get that one item settled and spend more time procrastinating on other things.
The main goal of the blog is removing fear of failure when dealing with/in bitcoin. Like addressing concerns over self-custody, kyc vs non-kyc, spending vs hodling, etc.
It'll be more of a personal blog angle, describing things I have done rather than a how-to format. Maybe I'll have the odd soap box moment, but the majority would be about real world encounters, eg. things I have done, failed at, and learned myself.
Monetization of the blog/content itself isn't a concern. If this ever turned into income of some sort down the line, I'd imagine it more acting as a gateway to hands-on workshops, or maybe speaking events.
As for discussion, I don't care if it happens on the publishing platform or somewhere else like SN, nostr, or anywhere else as long as the friction is reasonable. (In fact, I think some friction might be good to reduce low quality comments and spam.)
So, if you were starting a new blog, where would you publish it? Bonus points if you can point to an existing blog that has used that avenue and is doing well with it.
Github Pages + SN
Both use markdown natively so it will be very easy to post on both simultaneously
My dream is for SN to have a widget I can plug into any web page to power a comments section of a post, and the post is automatically visible on SN as well, and comments coming from both SN and my own web page can be seen on both sites

I second doing it on SN, at least for the first few months to see if you get traction.
I've done blogs with wordpress, blogspot, and medium before, and the biggest problem is always discovery. Hosting your blog on SN gives you a bit of visibility to start with. There are lots of people here who would engage with your posts and perhaps you could enlist them as your marketing force (sharing on nostr, X, reddit, so on) -- you could even offer bounties for sharing.
The easiest, lowest cost way to do it might be to publish in ~bitcoin_beginners and just put a little tag at the beginning of your posts (eg. [FM] is what ended up working for the fiction month contest).
If you really wanted to force yourself to commit to the writing, you could pay for your own territory.
I know that @sox is working on a editor that is going to allow a lot more control over how posts look and there is also the idea that SN territories could one day be hosted at your own custom domain.

I'm still very excited about custom domains. They're the fastest way for someone to create their own blog, while benefiting from an already established user base.
and also moderation via bitcoin.

The editor is a gamble on users' creativity. We're going to give people writing freedom (with some very understandable limitations), let's see how it goes lol

Well this sounds exciting and promising. Go go go! We are waiting.

it is going to be sooooo awesome! very excited here.

It sounds pretty hard in every sense ahah

Awesome suggestions, thank you!
This in particular:

Seems like a low risk way to test the waters.

We talked about this so many times, and I personally love this idea. Might create an issue on GitHub 👀 but like no commitment (lol), while the idea is really good, I suspect we would cross a lot of obstacles

Ah, I wasn't aware yet that GH pages support native md. Only used it for statically generated pages (html) in the past.
That's an interesting idea.

Habla or some other native Nostr-thing?
Maybe long-form posts on Twitter, if that's your thing.
reply
Thanks for the suggestion. Haven't had a look at Habla yet.

Never been on Twitter myself. And the few times I lurked for a couple of days to see if I should reconsider, the squabbling drove me out rather quickly.

Highlighter is the other Nostr one I've used before (not particularly consistently). I hear Hable is better

Stacker News - bitcoin people are here Nostr - use Habla or Untype.app for long form Hive.blog - good for recording a blog and this would be the most immutable and persistent (SN is centralized, may one day go bye-bye, and Nostr relays and notes can go kaput)
A question in my mind would be the desired reach. Do you want to reach bitcoin people or reach out to others? SN and Nostr are heavy bitcoin, Hive is too (but a bit lesser degree). If you wanted to really reach out then Medium and that type of thing.

Intended audience are beginner-ish bitcoiners who are hesitant to spend and haven't fully discovered yet just how empowering it is to be your own bank.

Based on that, SN or Nostr might not be the best place. Both are heavy "bitcoin people" in my view, SN especially. I'm sure it is degrees though, some new and learning, some very old and talented bitcoiners. But, SN and Nostr might be preaching to the choir.

True that. I don't know where the intended audience tends to hang out.
It would be for those who got over the reddit crowd where it's only about ngu or an i'm-hodling-harder-than-you contest.
When I was at that stage, I had left reddit already and was mostly homeless until I found SN.

share it here on stacker news and write a synopsis, share the post to your custom domain

right here! Publish here. And then go meet bitcoin people.
While you publish here, you can simultaneously publish to nostr
I find this experience very smooth. My wallet attachments here have only been more simplified over time and is now the easiest ever.
I have been publishing here and I've also been plugged into the bitcoiner community which has only led to more opportunity to find exactly what I want to do.

Good shout. I have a bit of a challenge in the sense that we live a nomadic life at least for half of each given year. So it's an uphill battle to become a regular in meat space.
Having said that, I am still trying to connect to the communities where we spend time frequently. I'm also looking into starting set of introductory sessions for U3A or similar to have a meetup where bitcoin curious people can ask questions without needing to commit.

I still need to decide on a beginner SN/nostr wallet setup. Best get cracking.
