Purdy's cap hit is 9M this year.
If the 49ers could have signed Mac Jones until 2029 at 5M/yr I am pretty sure they would have. The fact that they didn't because Mac Jones wanted an opportunity to rebuild his career and then get paid starter market rate elsewhere makes your argument moot. Unless of course as we discussed before your argument is every 1-2 years you sign a new reclamation project QB off the scrap heap and pay them nothing until they leave in FA and make 40M a year. Which is a completely insane and reckless way to try to build a sustainable winner and preserve the brand value of a 9B dollar business.
You either sign a guy you believe you can win with or you tank and draft a guy you think you can build a winner with. You don't switch your most important player every year trying to catch lightning in a bottle. That's fantasy football.
I do think there a legitimate scenarios where you are between the two situations and sign bridge guy to be competitive who makes less than a long term starter would. Like Geno in LV but 49ers didn't feel they were in that situation. They may end up being wrong on Purdy and you can disagree with it but you can't argue well just pay the other guy 80% less because you can't do that for 5 years which is the length of the contract.
But that’s the risk you take to fill out the roster.

I’m not advocating for that I just think Mac Jones might be a better overall fit for the team and future cap considerations. If the GM is savvy maybe you can get Jones on a mid-level QB salary.
I just reject the idea that we have to pay guys because “that’s the market” sometimes it works out other times it really hurts the fans and franchise in the long run. As I Bills fan I saw the franchise over pay QBs because “that was the market “ and it screwed us fans for years.
Daniel Jones was paid by the Giants and they let Saquon go due the overvaluation of QBs and the undervaluation of RBs. Hindsight is always 50-50 but if Giants fans can hit the redo button maybe they pay Saquon and tell Jones to pound sand.

i agree with you that paying guys doesn't always work out but I don't also don't see guys who are good fits to a system and playing well taking mid level QB salaries very often. Baker being the exception.
I am sure if the 49ers had a crystal ball and knew Mac Jones would look like first year pro bowler Mac Jones the calculus might have been different but no one knew that. The criticism of the 49ers that I think is fair is not waiting one more year to sign Brock since he was locked up for this year but I also know why they did it. They got rid of a bunch of contracts and locked up all their core guys this past offseason so they wanted to get the QB deal done as well. Still too early to determine if it was a bad deal or not. 4.5 more years to go but obviously in hindsight with Purdy getting hurt and Mac playing so well they might have saved themselves 10M a year if they waited on get the Purdy deal done until after this year. My argument with Purdy has always been he doesn't have a lot of teams that he is a great fit with. Because he has size and arm strength limitations you can't just drop him into any system so I think the 49ers had more leverage than him. They could have waited or squeezed him but overall I am ok with the contract. I hope he plays out the whole thing and it works out great. If not, I guess they will cut him in a couple years and take a huge dead cap hit. Time will tell.
I do wonder now that we are seeing some guys have success with second chances in their careers if QB salaries aside from the top guys will come down a bit

Yeah this was my argument all along! The niners have overcame the Trey Lance bust got to the Super Bowl with Jimmy G! Made a great trade for CMC! They had all the leverage and yet paid Purdy! The niners were never a desperate franchise like the Browns, Jets, or Bills (pre Allen) where a QB plays well for a bit and then they over pay them.
I think Lynch and Kyle run the niners really well. Now I am starting to think josh wins in spite of The Buffalo’s mismanagement of the roster and draft picks and free agents that haven’t really panned out.
